Voit Trieste Timeline

Mon Feb 04, 2008 2:47 am

I have been noticing these Trieste II regs popping up in various places lately, and was wondering if anyone knows what years they were available?
The original Trieste no longer appears in Swimaster catalogs after 1970, but I have never seen any catalog with the Trieste II in it. I'm guessing it was in some Voit catalog I've never seen (obviously). Any info would be appreciated..

Mine do too, but none show the Trieste II. I'd love to see a catalog it was featured in..

From what I understand the Trieste II was never included in any Voit catalog. :(

I'm sure that Greg Barlow can confirm (or correct) the validity of this statement. 8)

I'm still waiting on the Trieste info to finish up the Voit post in the technical section....

I would have posted on this, but still have no information on Trieste IIs. Waiting for Greg to chime in on the topic..

That sucks. So that makes 2 Voit regs never seen in any catalog, the VCR-5 and Trieste II? It would seem to be true about the Trieste II. I'm looking at 1971 Voit and 1971 Swimaster catalogs, and nary a doublehose to be seen..
I would still like to know from someone who was diving then if Triestes could still be ordered for a few years after 1970, similar to RAMs being sold for a couple of years more after 1973...

I remember a new Trieste II for sale at Sub Aquatics in Ohio as late as 1975. I didn't buy it.

Sorry about the late entry...I just got home from a 13 hour day. In fact, I worked 27 hours over the last two days.

The Trieste II was not illustrated in any Voit catalogs that I have in my possession. Nor, do I recall any such literature back when I started diving with Voit gear around 1971. I corresponded with two former Voit employees back in 1999, and one of the white collars seemed to remember that they were basically units that were rebadged and sold around 1970-1971 to use up the supply of Trieste (I) parts. I suspect that this is probably true. The curved mouthpiece was used on the II, but one must remember that Voit was a producer of rubber parts for USD. The die modification to signify AMF Voit rather than the USD insignia would have been simple.

I really like the whole concept of the Trieste reg. However, I will readily admit that it is tough to correctly adjust the second stage.

Had Voit used the larger cans and diaphragm with the design, it would have been an even better design. The small diaphragm and lever geometry made it tough to get much mechanical advantage out of the system.

Even so, Voit had a real neat idea in using the same body for a double hose and single hose reg (Titan). The addition of the reserve mechanism was also a plus.

As far as timeline goes, the Trieste was first introduced in the 1966 catalog and was last listed in 1970.

Outstanding! Many thanks for this info Greg! :) So, the Trieste II was nothing more than a Trieste I with different label and different mouthpiece, made to use up surplus parts.. I had kind of suspected that, because I could see no difference between the two in exploded diagrams other than the curved mouthpiece.
And yeah, Voit's modular system of interchangeable parts for doublehoses and single hoses was very advanced, and far ahead of it's time. It's a real shame they let the Trieste die after only 4 years. But then that is typical of Voit, none of their regulators (other than MR-12s) were in production for more than a few years...
