Please explain how to resize a pic for loading as an avatar, here.
I have tried but no luck, no matter how small I resize the photo

Avatar pictures must meet these criteria:
Maximum file size of 1228 bytes
Minimum dimensional size of 20x20 pixels
Maximum dimensional size of 100x100 pixels
What you need to do is get whatever picture you want on your desktop, and then go here:

This site is just one site, but there are many like it. If you go to google, just type this:
"Avatar pictured creator"
Many free sites will pop up.
Go to one of them, and upload your picture. The site will ask you for size and dimensional constraints.
Put in 100 x 100 for pixels.
Put in 1228 bytes for maximum file size.
The site will then present you with a small avatar photo for download, which you can then use here.
