Aluminum Tank Hydro

Mon Oct 07, 2013 9:19 pm

I picked up a "small" (USD Navy Mk 11 Label ),3000 PSI aluminum tank for $20. Last hydro 7/83. Does anyone know if this can still be hydro'd. IF not, I figure it can be "Cut" snd used as a nice regulator stand.

Honestly... if its an old aluminum tank I dont think its worth it, it might have a tough time passing as I believe those older aluminum tanks were made from a weaker alloy. I would rather put the $50 towards a new tank then waste time and money with an old one. Now if it were a steel 72 on the other hand, I would go get that think hydro'd and put a HW Gold Label on it!!!

Although it would probably pass hydro it is just not worth the effort and cost considering many dive shops refuse to fill aluminum tanks made prior to 1990. Use it for display.

In the UK I have three tanks from the 1970's

Only sent one so far for testing, others still have air in but several years out of test.

They would not pass the original aluminium tank valve so they replaced that with a more modern yoke valve (knob on side rather than on top).

It had to have a "Visual Eddy" test and cost £85.00 / $140 to test which in the UK is valid for 2.5 years

All our tanks have to be tested every 2.5 years visual, then 2.5 years later a hydraulic test.

I checked with my local dive shop in RHode Island and he will fill any aluminim tank within hydro and VIP.Thte tank passed hydro and visual eddy test.($38) It full of air and ready to go. I think it is just nice to have a small lighter tank as an option.
