Gasket - USD Valve

Sat Oct 13, 2012 12:36 pm

I posted a previous message about dip tubes. Made some up and they worked great. Theans everybody for the advice.

Hopefully somebody can help me out with one laset question so I can put the valve into service.

Nut sure what type of material it is made of but there is a nylon? gasket at one side of the valve (the cap has do not remove stamped on it). Not sure if this is a one time use crush gasket but it is in rough shape.

It is 1/2 ID and arounf .68 OD. Any ideas what to use here or where to get on?

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
My USD double manifold in (1962) had this plug on one end. USD, sold a Button
gauge that took up this space. As I remember, this was one tuff little washer, nylon
or an early teflon. I bet USD has a crate full somewhere in stock. send them a picyure.

take care,
Jerry

That gasket is still a current service item for the USD solid bar twin manifold, part #821011. Getting one from a shop may be difficult as most are either unwilling or unknowledgable.
That leaves a couple of other options 1- reuse it, I have done this many times with no problems. 2- buy an appropriate thickness sheet of nylon material and make your own.

Thanks again. Just wondering why they didn't use an o-ring. Also was wondering what it was made of.

Washer is in to rough shape to use. Can always cut from nylon rod on the lathe. I guess the question is would you use nylon or teflon?

I think the original is nylon. Copper also works very well with high pressure.
The older I get the better I was.

You could try either of these two washers from McMaster-Carr.

95630A246
Low-Friction PTFE Flat Washer 1/2" Screw Size, .69" OD, .027"-.035" Thick

95606A470
Nylon 6/6 General Purpose Flat Washer 7/16" Screw Size, .69" OD, .02"-.04" Thick

They both have the dimensions you mentioned. The first one is $3.17 for a box of 10.

In high pressure applications I have found PTFE too soft. Works fine in a tapered pipe thread, not so good as a washer or valve seat. Copper as suggested should also work.
