Filtering Recommedations?

Sun Jan 10, 2021 12:08 am

I have a small Cornelius compressor and wanted to add some form of filtration to it. Is there anything anyone can recommend that won’t cost an arm and a leg? Compressor is only rated for .6 cfm.

not sure where you draw the line for "an arm and a leg"....

You could try to see if Jim Sheldon has any components left over as he has announced his full retirement. http://www.sheldensportinggoods.com/

On the other forum a fella posted a link to a set up and it was almost $2400. I will only have $500-600 in the compressor including a brand new motor, pulleys, and electrical. I just don’t have the funds to swing $2400. I was reading in this forum about the cheap filter stacks from eBay and they look promising.

Have you looked at all in the logistics of using this very little compressor (very low CFM) to actually fill a tank? Is the compressor even capable to handle the stress of running the duration of time necessary to fill a tank?

I have. I’ve gotten my information from the manuals section of this site. In the article it talks about the compressors be run for days on end. I’m planning on mostly filling my lp 72’s.

Hi Big Red,

If you are referring to this thread: https://vintagedoublehose.com/forum/vie ... hp?t=10211 yes, Surf Lung did a pretty good investigation of the budget filters available on eBay. I am far from being a compressor or filtration expert and have also invested in one of these setups.

IMHO for filling a few bottles that may be all the filtration you need. But the filter element in the system is very small (see the photos I've posted) and will not last long. Fortunately, you can cut the cartridge open and repack it with the chemicals of your choice. Speaking of media, the components in the budget filter appear different than the typical MS 13x & AC found in most filter cartridges. So if you do not plan to re-pack your filter housing you will be at the mercy of whoever can provide replacement cartridges.

Having said that-there is one very positive thing coming out of Surf Lung's discovery. The moisture separator is very effective. In fact, when I bleed my main filters I get zero moisture out of them.

I chose to convert the filter that came with the budget setup to just a MS cartridge-but that may not be necessary for you if you're just filling a few tanks here and there.

Please know that you'll have to find some adapters for the filter housing to mate it up with your compressor and fill whip. I think I mentioned that in Surf Lung's thread.

Good luck and keep us posted with your findings.

Thanks for your post. That’s great news. Where do you buy the media to repack your filters? Also, do you have a non return valve, a safety valve, and a pressure maintains valve plumbed into your setup? Sorry for all the questions, but I trying to learn and get this setup right the first time.

I'll have to dig around and update thread post later with the information on the filter media.

In the meantime, see this thread and the link in it for some great information on how the plumbing should be set up.

To answer your question about how my system is set up it is basically like this:
Compressor--> check valve (one way valve) -->moisture separator-filter housing with a over pressure relief valve (safety valve) on a T. The other side of the T has the PMV-->pressure gauge--->fill whip.

I think I purchased my filtration media supplies at:
https://scubacompressor.com/product/act ... ion-quart/
https://scubacompressor.com/product/vap ... ant-quart/
https://scubacompressor.com/product/2-1 ... felt-pads/

Captain and Antique Diver forget more about compressors every day than I'll ever know. They can probably point you to a few vendors that can help you find the other stuff you're in need of.

What about hopcalite for CO? I use it along with in-line monitoring.

I agree that adding hopcalite is a good idea and I should include it in my filter system. I probably will on the next re-pack. In the meantime, I use a CO monitor on every tank I fill. To be clear, the budget filter set did not have hopcalite nor did the filter that came with my compressor.

It's not a bad idea to use with any breathing air compressor, but even more important in those powered by gas or diesel engines.
I use three-component (Molecular sieve, Hopcalite and charcoal) filters in my electric as well as in my gas engine driven systems.
The older I get the better I was.
