When Rob and I were diving at Portage at the Sam and Sam event, we were able to observe the great buoyancy skills of the teckies. The quarry has attached to the old loader a mirror at a depth of about 20 feet. The mirror is a magnet for all of us divers with vanity. Rob and I did our view and then watched as 3 or 4 teckies with more dive gear on them than a store proceeded to position themselves to look into the mirror. Meanwhile Rob and I moved back and hung perfectly suspended with only the minimum of gear, I was using my twin 38s, Rob with his twin 72s. The teckies were finning and sculling and having a hell of a time staying neutral. Rob and I looked at each other and almost lost our mouthpieces because we were laughing so much.

My idea of the video is not so much to illustrate the differences of the gear of the past and the present, but to demonstrate the skills that we use with the vintage gear. It will be as if the video was being made in 1960 and we have no knowledge of the future. Let them make fun of us, I think we are above that. If they don't like it, then they won't have to try it.

Vintage Dive Gear Techniques Video Project

Sun Oct 29, 2006 12:23 pm

Amigos,

I think this is a great idea, and Bryan's list (pasted below) has all the components needed to start:

1. Assembly and correct setup of regulator/backpack/harness for correct height.
2. Various ways to clear hoses/regulator
3. Buddy breathing
4. PROPER BUOYANCY without a bc
5. Ditch and don...THE OLD SCHOOL WAY
6. Dive planning WITHOUT A PRESSURE GAUGE

I would possibly add j-valve use to Item 6. (Your guys thoughts?)

Even being primarily a still shooter, I have dabbled in video in the past, too. Plus Ron Yanega has more experience than me shooting 3 chip (very good color and detail) video and already has lots of editing experience.

So let's keep discussing if you want pool footage initially (Allan and models from NY, of course, tee hee) or want to try and work on some really cool images from SD IV in a nice brightly lit, shallow location such as Alexander Springs on start up day? Or Weeki Wachee which is a spectacular underwater venue.....

Finally, the comments about buoyancy, etc. are hilarious. I go to pools where current instructors (sadly, some even friends) can't seem to teach people neutral buoyancy today using weighting techniques and breath control without having them play with their BCs doing the up/down elevator imitation.....Very sad.....

Then Ron and I come in with a back pack, old reg and no BC and are hovering all around these guys (usually with camera system in our hands!) and wonder why, oh why, can't we teach people to truly enjoy the weightlessness we all came to love when first venturing beneath the waves......

As is so popular these days, the saying: Whatever!

Hey guys,

I've been hesitating to jump in here because I am pretty new, but the more you talk about this the more I want in. I'm no Haas, that's for sure (and I mean that) but film & video production is my "real" job. I have recently won awards in cinematography, editing & lighting and would LOVE to offer whateve I can to this type of a project. I am VERY new to vintage diving and I have a LOT of questions when it comes to all of the skills you are wanting to teach. (All of my training is PADI so it gives me little to go on). I would jump at the oportunity to learn from guys who know what they are doing with this stuff. Please let me know if there is anyhing I can do to help. Check my website for more about my video biz. aand let me know.

Please know too that I am not pitching for a job either but rather offering.

Robb,

Your website is great!

It is obvious to me that you need to be invovled in some way or another. Having a professional such as yourself involved (in any capacity) will help to make the final product professional.

I can see it now, a Telly Award for a NAVED video. 8)

Thank you for sharing your abilities with us. :)

Regards,

Joe

If we did it righ, there's no doubt in my mind we could get a Telly if not multiple. This really could be not only educational but highly enteraining, fun to watch and maybe could spark a reawakning to all of the dull, hose covered, armcrosssed fish pointers that inhabit the best divespots today. (And I mean that in a Frankensteinish kind of way beingthat it is Halloween. - Not that reawakening dead tissue is easy.. :D )

This could be VERY cool!

If it is educational maybe even some grants to make it from government. you pay taxes , might as well get some of it back.

Vintage Diving Video

Tue Oct 31, 2006 10:43 pm

Rob,

Your stuff is fantastic as JES says, so run with it! I only commented that if I provided some stills or could provide some help in video I'd be happy to do it.

You obviously have much more actual experience pulling all these pieces together so any assistance you can provide would really be a boone to sharing vintage diving with people.

Let me know how I can help you guys!

Thanks Dave!

Like Ive said - I am blown away by you work so a complement from you means tons!! Thanks!

Perhaps we all should figure out just what it would take to make this happen. The first problem I can see is that we are spread out all over the country.

The second is the script - what exactly should this look like and contain.

Lets take an invintory of expertise - so far, I think we'd be best off to find the best of everything we can:

Vintage Equipment dive knowledge (21, Bryan, Rob,YankDU...)
Ability to communicate that knowledge in depth knowledge to the beginner
Dive skills and on-camera personality (Rob, Bryan??)
Knowledge of vintage style (Alan!!??)
Great vintage gear for on camera use
Liability/legal protection expertise
Budgeting and book keeping
Scheduling Travel, lodging...
Fundraising (GRANTS ESPECIALLY)
Photographic experience & ability (Haas, me, Susan...)
Best locations for UW photography...

Also how would you feel about puting in a section on making your own wetsuit (COOL!?)

Alan - what do you think?
Again - don't let me steam roll anyone. And if i neglected your name above please remember Im new here and am just getting to know you all. This could be SO cool! Most awards have entry categories for educational and training videos. Lets make this fun and VERY informative with TONS of personality. Old school all the way of COURSE!

Of course we need a short on underwater double hose treasure finding. No video would be complete without it.

ever since i found this site, bryan and his store, my enthusiasm for Dh divng has come back. Ny old reg was in pieces, now it works. perhas that side of the story needs to be told. What was old is now new and include the pheonix.

just my 1.5 cents canadian

I'm just up the road in Sacramento - 8)
Heck, we could just paste together clips from SEA HUNT to make the video.
