vintage divers speak up

Tue Nov 21, 2006 11:48 pm

When returning a rental tank I brought my Ram with to check out H tank valves. The woman running the store was shocked to learn the reg was a double hose without the hoses ( hoses were drying ) Since I agreed to bring my full rig in to show the class in the near future she gave me the 4 day rental for free. The point in all this is -are you sure your LDS knows your vintage- I thought everyone in the store knew I dived vintage. Apparently when I was saying double hose they were thinking double tanks. So hopefully might have some new converts in the near future.

Great news!

I'm afraid if I mention 'double hose' in my LDS, they will stop selling me air!

Mine asked me to display my gear in their display cabinet. They told me they would put up a sign telling everyone it was my collectrion with my name on it, etc. I laughed at them, told them to get their own gear as this gear belongs in the water, not a display cabinet. I DIVE THIS STUFF!

I get cracks about my steel 72's being heavy and maintance intensive. I never understood those comments as the 72's are much easier to swing around, have better dive characteristics then an AL80 and have the SAME maintance. That is of course if HIS compressor has been properly maintained. The next thing you know he'll be telling me I'm wearing the compressor out because I get so many fills. Ha.

Vintage LDS owner

My LDS owner is a vintage diver, and I don't mean the gear. He has been opened for over 35 years and still has some vintage gear lying about. I keep trying to get him to sell it to me with occasional sucess.

He seems to get a kick out of my enthuisasm for vintage diving and even helped me out when I overhauled my first DA. In fact, he even had the body wrench for removing the retaining still sitting in his tool cabinet.

But what I really like to do is pry old stories out of him. He as been around since the sport was young and has seen and done a lot of things above and beyond what a regular LDS owner would do.

The guy seems to be just scrapping by financially, but he has a led a far more interesting life than I have.

That is funny :D . Both of the shops here just roll their eyes but I buy stuff from them so they like me.

Steel 72 weigh less than aluminum 80s and heavy tanks are in fashion now anyways.

I may go on one of the LDS shop trips this coming summer just so I can pester them. They really think I don't dive and that I just collect all this old junk. I want the oportunity to show them different, I feel a southern style reckoning comeing on  .

I'm still trying to pry that Divair out of the display case at Adventure Sports.

I have my DA on display at my LDS. But it's there to encourage other potential vintage divers. Even though it's on display it works, and I'll let others try it in the pool as long as I'm there too so I can show them the basics.

1 of the owners learned on a double hose, and he has an eye out for vintage gear that someone may want to sell. So far nothing.

I get more & more questions everytime I use my vintage gear. Maybe next season I'll get a convert or 2.

we have 2 lds here, one went stupiod on me when i showed up with my vintage steel tanks for hydro etc, and they even refused to tumlbe and inspect it because it had a liner in it. I have since that time received more info on this from the members of the forum.

The other shop, when i asked if they would not servic e the tank because of a liner, they tried some bs, but a quick quote from the PSI handbook put that to rest real quick. Seems they get a kick out of my old gear, tanks and regs Would nbe nice to set up my pheonix RAm against ehir best single hoser see what happens. They did a breathing test on their bench with my RAM (i wasnt there for it), aparently it did very well (it was serviced by Bryan) Said it was just too close to their best single hose to mkake a difference.

I never thought to ask what they compared it to.

Great idea about the LDS trips this summer and "The Southern Style Reconing"!! :D Is this the trip that also includes "Special Guest Star" Bryan Pennington? In fact your "Trip" almost sounds like my "Northern Michigan S_ _ t Stirring Tour" Isn't it fun goin' out and preachin' the "gospel" about two hose regs and vintage diving, and now being able to look them all in the eye and say "YES" as a matter of fact you can buy parts to repair and restore many of these regs. I can relate to every comment made on this topic that I've either gotten from LDS owners and employees, divers, non-divers and just about anyone else you can think of. It sure is fun though and rewarding when you know you've gotten their attention and interest, and maybe; just maybe a new vintage diver. Safe Diving To All! :D Terry Stevens
