Re: Nemrod Snark III leaking air

I took this thing out diving yesterday, and after a few minutes the leak went away. What's up with that?

Yep, swimjim, I think you're right. I should probably just use this regulator more often. I still have a new LP seat on the way here, and I'll save it until the current one is totally beyond use. I really like my Nemrod. Unfortunately, I don't use my double hose regs as often as I would like to, as the majority of my diving is in the Saint Clair River under the Blue Water Bridge (to Canada) in Port Huron. The current here is VERY strong. The corrugated hoses are not very "hydrodynamic" (is that a real word?), and the breathing characteristics of a double hose regulator isn't nearly as desirable as a single hose when diving in this strong current, unless one is merely "drift diving" with the current.

Re: Nemrod Snark III Manual ?

Wed Jan 07, 2015 1:48 pm

I also picked up a Nemrod Snark 111 Seamless ( not the Silver model).
It appears to breathe O'K on the surface but would like to open it up.
Where can I get a drawing. Herman mentioned a manual. I do did not find anything on the VDF site?

Thanks

Not sure if he is still on ebay, but there use to be a guy who sold reproduction manuals, one of which was a Nemrod. I have one of those.

If a copy is available I'll have it scanned and put into the manuals and catalogs section for future reference. Thank you

Lothar,
The manual I am looking for is the Nemrod Seamless Snark 111 ( non Silver model)
I did download the one you mentioned though.
Thanks

The Snark III (not silver) has a slightly different second stage seat/configuration. My Silver has an HP port. I'm not sure all silvers had that though. I've have both the original Snark III and I currently own a Snark III Silver. They are both super nice regulators.

Do you happen to know if one model was marketed as supposing to be an improvement or superior over the other?

The Snark III was replaced by the Snark III Silver, if that's what you mean. The Snark III Silver was one of the last, if not the last production double hose regulators. Along with the Mentor it was used to train Navy seals. Of course now we have the Kraken, but that's a whole new chapter in the double hose world.

Silver models were made after the Silver Anniversary of Nemrod. There are Snark II Silver models and Snark III Silver models.

The Snark III was an upstream regulator, so a over pressure relief is need should the reduction valve (first stage) develop a leak. Nemrod advertised that they had a three stage regulator, when the third stage was just the blow off, which other up stage regulator all had (Heinke, Porpoise, Sea Bee, Air Dive, etc.)

Up stream regulators are common with hookah as they work well with variations in line pressure. Having a high line pressure will increase your initial 'cracking' effort but give you a good flow. Low line pressure makes for ease of breathing, but you may not get the flow you need, if it is too low. They are very reliable. If it's it's working, I would leave it alone.

Over pressure valve leaks are common with Snark III regulators. I had a few and I just screwed them tighter and they worked fine. Other leaks are from corrosion and a little white vinegar cleans them up with no abrasives needed. Make sure you wash the vinegar with lots of clean water. It tastes terrible.

Yank, thanks for all of the info. I didn't know any of the history of this thing.
