New to vintage diving because of this site.

Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:13 pm

Greetings all. I am new to vintage diving and just wanted to express my thanks to all the posters on this site as it was reading everyone's posts and advice that pushed me to purchase my first double hose, a Dacor R-4, of $80. I have done a couple of pool dives on my R-4 and am quite happy with its breathing but given its age I have sence sent it off to Mr. Powell for service. That aside, I am also in the process of purchasing a RAM to be used as my travel double hose. I think it's safe to say that I am now addicted to vintage dive gear, the history of diving, and preserving this great machines. Again, thanks all and I look forward to futher reading and advice.

I think it is Jerry Powell. Also known as Dacor Jerry.

He is a great guy and he used to work for Dacor until they were sold to Mares. He continue to work for Mares as a service technician for a while.

He is probably one of the few sources left with some hard to find parts for Dacor equipment.

Welcome to the board and double hose diving.
If you liked the R4 you will love the RAM, It breathed better in original condition than the R4 and with all the new improvements that have been made, it is worlds apart. In the next few months I have a thread coming you should find very interesting.

Certainly a generation gap here

I was never a Dacor fan- but in the 1950s my neighbor was the first California distributor of Dacor
Dacor to me is Sam Davison, President, Jack Bromrich National sales manager, Verne Petersen,Enginner and Ron Prevelka National marketing manager..

Now Sam & Verne are gone and last reports Jack was retired in Canada and Ron is selling restate in NorCal

Now a new name. I do recall hearing it associated with Dacor in the past

Welcome and thanks fo telling us a little about your Dacor. SwimJim showed me his restored Dacor R-4 at one of our Fortune Pond diving get togethers. He offered to let me try it but I was busy playing with my own regulators... I should have taken him up on it!

Yep, DacorJerry is currently working on my reg. I was hoping to have it back in time for my first OW class observation, I'm working on obtaining my DM certification. I'm hoping to, once I get my hands on the RAM, convert it to a Phoenix so that I can intigrate it into my modern gear but for right now I'm content with putting together a complete Dacor dive kit for collection purposes. Not surprising there isnt much in the way of vintage diving here in Phoenix, or southern California for that matter.

Oh, that Jerry. Makes perfect sense now.

I bought a reg from Jerry a couple years ago, he's a very good guy and a wealth of knowledge.

Nope. Sea Hunt Jerry, aka Kemps cow, is the moo man. Dacor Jerry of Salem Wisconsin is "the" Dacor Jerry. Both good people.
In my collection I have an R-4, C3 clipper and a couple of diving lungs. My R-4 when coupled with the VDH plate is a respectable dive reg. I should have Dacor Jerry tweak it some time and see if he can pull some more performance out of it. Say what you want about Dacor double hosers, the DO look cool at least.
Now if you go by strictly performace, nothing beats a Phoenix set up with an HPR second stage and all the trimmings. I really enjoy that reg.
Welcome aboard Dacordiver23. If your dealing with Jerry, are you in my relative neighborhood? I live just north of Port Washington Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Unfortunatly I live in the sandbox known as Phoenix, Arizona. There is a LDS here that has a pretty respectible collection of vintage gear but they dont service them so, after some digging, I emailed Jerry and he agreed to look at my R-4, that was mid December. I'm still waiting to hear back from him but I live by that motto "patience breeds quality" and from everything that I've read, he does great work. I've also picked up a Dacor back plate and matching wrist mounted depth gauge. If nothing else I'm hoping that by exposing the students in the SCUBA courses to some of the history of diving I might build up some interest in diving the vintage gear too.
