Flea Market finds-Help a brother out!

Sun Jun 17, 2012 3:49 pm

Last week in Virginia I hit a flea market and manged to pick up a very nice Fenzy and a cylinder. Works perfectly with no leaks and the cylinder had pressure in it. I peeked inside the bottle and it was clean. I also got a very nice Pico Blvd pressure checker with the "Diorama diver" logo in it as well as an old dive reel for the princely sum of 20 bucks for it all.

I felt like the scuba god had grinned at me. I am in Florida this week and just hit a yard sale. I own hundreds of pounds of lead dive weights but I bought over 20 pounds of soft weight at a yard sale today for 3 dollars. The shops are currently gettin 4 bucks a pound for soft weights so I could not let it just sit there. The old lady just sighed.

Next stop was a flea market in St. Pete. There was a very heavy duty dive bag like I have never seen before. It was made by Global out of a hypalon material and it was full of old dive gear and some vintage gear. It did have a set of large Viking fins and oval mask. The reg was a N.E. /Sportsways single hose. It had a Sea View gauge as well as other capillary gauge of an unknown manufacturer. Also there was a Sportsways j-valve steel 72 with the 1/2" straight thread valve in it mounted on a backpack with a pull rod. There was also the other odds and ends in the bag like log books, neoprene hoods, gloves and save-a-dive kit. I never fail to turn up some neat old dive gear or dive books when in Florida and always have trouble packing up when I head home. One year I had to fit a very nice commercially built tank tumbler I bought for 12 dollars at a yard sale in the back of our vehicle. The old lady hated hauling it around all week.

I am at the stage in my life where I need to get rid of gear, not accumulate more. I have over 40 tanks in my shop and I just don't use them. The guy was trying to get rid of this gear but I decided I would muster up the strength to just say no. I told him that old junk would kill you. As I walked away he told me I could have it all for a buck. I handed him a dollar and threw it in the back of my vehicle. I have spent less then 5 bucks for it all today and a lot of it I will use. I felt I did rather well. I am sure the old lady wll start back talking to me any time now once she hears from you guys how well I did...

Dear Mrs. Crimediver,

Your diving husband has accumulated a bunch of worthless junk. Just to protect my fellow diver from your wrath, and possibly save your marriage, I will give you $80 for all his old diving gear and haul it off for you next time he is out of town.
The older I get the better I was.

I just plan to get one of those cargo containers like that Ray character had in the video and keep all my gear there - not a bad dog house either :)

I need some of your luck, I've been striking out lately and have had to resort to building my own stuff in the intern.

I don't have the tank checker with me as I am still out of state. I do have a link to the same model as the one I bought from an eBay auction I had been watching. There are a bunch of pics on it and you can zoom in on the gauge face and see the diver with the speargun.:

My checker is identical except the turn screw happens to be chrome plated while the rest is unplated brass I am not sure if it was a replacement or came that way.

Any chance the Sportsways 72 w/j rod could come available in future? It would match one I currently dive to make doubles

I may let it go. I have been messing with some Sportsway stuff lately. I am trying to see what the feasibility of doubling up a couple of steel PST SCBA tank on a Sportsway manifold. I own two Sportway twin manifold with a j-valve. I have put one manifold on two SCBA tanks and it makes a very neat and compact set of doubles. Sort of like a set of 38 cf tanks. I don't know exactly how many cubic feet the SCBA tanks are but they are 2216 psi as opposed to the 2250 psi but it bet they are very close.

I have one more Sportways j-valve doubles manifold. I was either going to make up a small set of doubles out of SCBA tanks or like you try to scrounge up another Sportsways 72 cf tank to double up.

I need to get it home next week and put my light down in there and see what kind of shape it is in. I am certified to viz tanks and need to check it out. It is hard to see down in there with just a 1/2' neck and I was a bit concerned when I removed the valve. The dip tube had a lot of corrosion on it but the tank had a very nice bell like tone when it tapped on it. Might just need a tumble but I wil see.

I just got a Sportsway 72 galvanized. It needs a hydro. Inside is ok, could be tumbled, but I wouldn't. I have enough Sportways so if you are interested, PM me.

I goofed a while ago and didn't buy Capt'n Tom's double Sportsways manifold. So I am not looking for one. Anybody have one to let go, please let me know.

I did offer it to Steve via PM, so I will give him a chance to at least respond as to whether he is interested or not. Love it when you offer and then . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
