Aqualung yellow hex/RGB code?

Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:52 pm

Odd question but does anyone know what the proper Aqualung yellow color is? Is it just FFFF00?

I am thinking of re-creating an old tank decal but I wanted to make sure I got the color at least slightly accurate.

You might ask Karl. He has been reproducing them for sometime. Normally there is a link to his stuff in the store but he is working on a new ad so it's absent for now. Here is a direct link.

Color was different on the 1970's decal. Not sure exact color.

That sounds like a good subject for a chart in the reference section...

Might be a useful thing to know the Voit blue sticker & can colors, plus they had a kinda interesting red-orange, the USD yellow, there's a staggering number of whites out there and it could be handy to know the VOit white for tank repaints. What are some of the others?

I think one of the hardest things about sprucing-up some of this old gear is knowing what it started out looking like, as most of what I've got is both dirty and faded. Even some of the printed material is a little hard to trust unless it's been kept in a cool dark drawer for 60 years. :?

I'm not one to suggest projects I'm not willing to do myself, mind you, but I don't have access to the original resources. Maybe some of you collector / museum guys...

If anyone has a really good, color-accurate add/catalog/photo of something they think would be useful but don't have a color match for it, you can scan it at 200dpi or better and email it to me and I pull a swatch in Photoshop which would at least give a rough RGB/CMYK ratio. It's not a Pantone #, but it would be a start. Just a thought. :)

Do you happen to know what the 1970's color is? This is probably the color I would most likely use.

I agree, it might be a good idea to have a color reference if such a document exists.

I was really just looking for something close or in the ballpark to be honest.

I started re-doing the Richard's Aqualung Center tank decal. I was planning on doing a short run of these decals for myself but I have no problem giving the artwork or photoshop files to someone else if they wanted to do their own run. (Dont worry, I'm not going to copyright it :-) I'm not sure if someone even already did this. I don't think it's a very popular tank decal but I liked it enough and figured it would look good on a couple of my old LP72s.

I know I could easily just do a color chooser from existing images out there on the internet but you never know how accurate the color is going to be based on pictures or what is looked like when it's actually printed versus how it looks on my non-color corrected monitors.

Ford "Chrome Yellow" came pretty close on my USD vinyl coated 1970's tank.

Pantone 138c.

:)

edit: hmmmm... just looked that up on the Pantone site, and it no look so close to me... pretty dark? However, my monitor here at the house is old old and was a POS when it was young, so that may not be the place to be looking. The little bottle of Chrome-Yellow Ford "scrach fix" I got at Autozone was a spot-on match for my tank.
