Too many people mistakenly think that servicing a regulator is like "tuning up" a lawn mower or "rebuilding a carb" These same people routinely convince unsuspectign divers that they know what they are doing and are allowed to service life support equipment.
Most grasp the basics but few understand the theory and reasons behind why regulators do what they do....I work on regulators daily and I still run into stuff I don't know. I have a group of peers on VDH that I rely on for advice and I always have a copy of Regulator Saavy close by. Sometimes the best thing to do when you get stumped is STOP...Take a break and read over the section in the book that pertains to what you are working on...99% of the time the answer is in there as well as the solution..
I have permission to use pages of it as a teaching aid but I can't allow reproduction or distribution of the material....As soon as I figure out how to accomplish this there will be a lot more discussion on regulator repair and service.
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
