New Triple Manifold Design

Fri Oct 22, 2010 2:31 pm

I always wanted a set of triples but I also remembered how hard it can be to get a ½” pipe thread set to hold air, just two many threaded areas that could leak easily. So, when Captain came up with his system of making a ¾” O-ring triple manifold out of a USD J-60 valve and J-62 manifold I just had to have one and here it is. The spacing is set at 6.25” so that it can be used with 5.25” diameter tanks. The result is that this manifold can be used with Catalina 30 or 40 cubic foot tanks.

Image

This manifold is a bit different as instead of using standard CGA 540 nipples, I got some 3” ¼ NPT to ¼” NPT extension and 2 & 1/8” nipples. When Captain got them he realized that the J-60 valve could be machined to take the extension with an O-ring seal instead of a sweated connection. He then trimmed the extensions to the correct length and then drilled and taped them to take the short nipples as required to get the correct on center distances.

Image

This allows the center to be used for any size tanks by using the extensions and various length nipples. Anyone for Triple 72’s?

I will put together a set of slides showing how the machining waqs done and were to source the parts in a few days.

Now, I have a big problem:

To J-Valve or Not to J-valve, that is the Question ……

Nice work! 8)

WRT your question "To J-Valve or Not to J-valve", I say just make another manifold and then you can have one of each.

Very nice and sturdy looking as well. I like the added ability to adjust for diff tank sizes. I want to see the triple 72s!

If only you didn't have to actually carry them at some point. :)

I think this becomes the most important part of your dive equipment.

But triple 72's, if I ever did such a thing (not likely) can't be all that much heavier then twin 130's

I just found the parts, Tom (Captain) did the design and machining. So, its just about all his idea.

I have done 4 manifolds so far and I am working on the 5th. No two are exactly alike, I learn something every time I make one and try to incorporate it in the next one. I started this project just to see if and how it could be done. I haven't made one for myself and really don't plan to do so.

I have the J60 and J62. A triple 72 set is really tempting! 216 cuft would be pretty awesome on a deep dive. Of course I wouldn't have the deco chamber waiting for me at 150 feet!

Hey Captain how much would a manifold cost me for you to build for a triple set of aluminum catalina 40's along with the bands for them? I would be interested in getting a manifold made.
Someone told me that diving a double hose reg will kill me. I had no idea these things were dangerous.
