Well, Joe, it is like this, it has now been one month approximately and I am much, much better but a long way from diving or cycling or running or doing anything on my own or engaging in any of my previous activities. I use a walker to get around, I don't drive yet, I have about 60% range of movement, the leg is considerably atrophied. I imagine I will be using a cane for a while to walk once they tell me I can put weight on the leg, which, now, when I do, it hurts--a lot.

I suspect I will not be going to Bonaire, I figure next summer is a more reasonable time for me to resume diving, but that could be overly pessimistic. Tripping and falling while waddling around in heavy gear shore diving or getting banged on a boat ladder like last year in the Bahamas is not going to be on my activity card for a while.

I had several trips planned yet this year and other (non diving) events so this has really been a bummer on multiple fronts But, I have a brand new indoor cycle trainer for one of my bikes and a new elliptical machine awaiting the word from the docs that I can use them .

I am actually very lucky that I am not on an iron lung, I hit the ground really, really hard. So, I should not complain.

Jupiter is big this month, I was once an amateur astronamer, I got out a couple of my scopes, of course my wife has to haul them around in and out of the house to the deck, so that is kinda fun, for me, not her . My 1958 Unitron refractor and 1984 JSO cat:

Those scopes are too cool. I particularly fancy the Vintage 1958 Unitron refractor. Isn't a 1950s refractor telescope the astronomy equivalent of a double hose?

Why, yes it is . Vintage bicycles, vintage telescopes and vintage double hose regulators and scuba diving, how much better can it be Is there a common thread here

Generally, we argue over it just for fun I know here on vdh , but we seem to take about 1970-ish or so for the end of vintage scuba era, but for bicycles and telescopes, no expert on it, but usually it is circa 1990. This corresponds to the down spiral of the Italian/European/Japanese bicycle industry, filing of Schwinn Company and death of the steel bicycle in general and the wholesale transfer of precision optical manufacturing from Japan and Europe (and USA) to China and Taiwan. Remarkably, there is a rising interest in steel bikes again and refractor telescopes, if not the long focal length oldies like my classic Unitron 114 bazooka.

Gotta be bout the laziest hobby ever, lay out in a lawn chair and watch the sky, cept I keep falling asleep until pestered by the cats.
My little pride and joy is a 80mm refractor I made from a kit from University Optics mounted on a Vixen Great Polaris mount.
That JSO looks a lot like my 4" Meade SCT spotting scope, wish I had gone with the 5" Celestron, have used several and the extra inch does wonders.

I only want one real antique scope, a little functioning Clark, maybe when I win the lottery?

I tripped yesterday, nearly falling, I swung my left leg forward to catch myself, instinctively, and it held! And with no pain, so, maybe I am doing OK .

I would love to get to my basement to work on regulators and stuff, I go up and down the stairs sitting on my rear, but, well, it works. I have several dh projects going together plus some tuning on the RAM I have for sale that I don't really want to sell but should Been working on my R109 set also.

Mudhog, the JSO is a 5 inch scope, 125mm clear aperture, 1200mm FL, it is much higher precision/quality than the Celestron/Meade stuff. It has a very precise focuser with no mirror flop. They were only sold in North America for a few years back in the 80s. I bought mine at Texas Nautical on Westheimer in Houston. If you find a Clark, well, good luck, I watch for those too, out of my price range unless I luck out. American made, pre-WWII, that is hard to do. I figure one day, I will be going along and spy one at a garage sell, covered with 80 years of dust on it, all sad and lonely, it is a dream . Yeah, , I know about cloudynights, thanks.

The oft heard statement, in regard to vintage dh regs, "those things are going to kill you" is probably greatly exaggerated, in regards to Tekna scooters, maybe not so much.

Well, I can ambulate sorta with a cane, doc gave me the OK to get on the Kinetic, so my old friend "Big Red" has been mounted up and I am up to 30 minutes which is about 10 miles or a bit less, maybe a bit more less . I crank with my right leg and let the left go for a ride right now.



Maybe I will dive again before a full year after all.

The Prince of Darkness had to go in for some major repairs....I was out in the bay cruising around the other day and a mine sweeper got in my way so I rammed it pretty hard ...You know, just to show it who was boss....Anyhow I cracked the bulkhead and according to the scooter dr it will look a little different the next time you see it.....

Knowing James like I do I'm willing to bet that by April he will be well enough to ride that bike all the way to Miami and catch a flight to Bonaire...
