Sand Dog VIII on Bonaire - the details

Wed Jul 07, 2010 6:32 pm

I have just returned from a Scouting mission on Bonaire for accommodations and diving for Sand Dog VIII, here are the options I came up with. What I need from those who are likely to go is for you to look over the 2 choices I have and give me your input. I need to make a decision in the few weeks.
But first a few comments on the diving. I had a long talk with the dive shop manager about our gear and vintage diving in general. He is very receptive to it and he has only 2 requirements. They are, a SPG and good buoyancy control. BCs, octos, and other modern gear are not a requirement. Basically, don’t run out of air and stay off the reef and he is happy. The packages I have put together include all the air/nitrox you can stand for shore diving. They do NOT include boat dives but they can be added back to individual packages if you like or single boat dives can be added once you are at the resort by simply signing up on a board. Nitrox is included, it comes with the package at no extra cost so why not.

What I need now is a head count of those who are likely to go and a vote on the resort. I do not need a solid commitment now, just an “I’m likely to go” so I have some idea of how many rooms to hold. I also need to know if you prefer a 1 bedroom or a 2 bedroom. The bed rooms will have 1 or 2 beds as needed, singles in a room are possible but at a considerably higher cost, sharing a room with a buddy is the least cost option. The resort is willing to work with me so I can add or drop rooms as needed up to a point but Buddy Dive usually fills fairly quickly so I need to get the rooms locked in shortly and while they will let me hold as many rooms as I need, they ask that I not over reserve by a large amount. For now I just need to get a idea of how many to hold. Because I am booking this as a group I can hold as many rooms as I need for one $500 fee (which I will front) with the ability to drop them later if they are not needed. Payment will be made directly to the resort, I will not handle anyone’s money. As a group we also get a group discount. For every 10 divers we have, we get one compensated spot. I intend to divide this by the total number of participants. Without getting into the math, this will work out to something in the $35 to $65pp at Belmar or $39 to $74pp at Buddy, not a huge amount but every little bit helps. I have stayed at both places and I think the Sand Doggers will be happy at either place. Buddy has in it’s favor on site restaurants and bar with several more in close walking distance but is a larger resort with a larger crowd. Bel Mar is a little more upscale, is quieter and IMO the house reef is a little nicer. On the down side, there are no restaurants close by so driving to meals is a must. Please take some time and visit their web sites. I have more payment details and photos to share but rather than filling up the post with the details, I will ask anyone who wants them to PM me with your email address and I will forward the information to you.

And we need a date. March 19,2011 is the full moon so night dives might be a little more interesting. March 19 to 26 (or 17-26) sounds good to me but I am open to suggestions.

EDIT: I have had a request to move it into April due to conflicts. The March date was just a starting point. Does April 2-9 work for the rest of you?

Here are the room Rates:

@ Belmar Apartments: http://www.belmar-bonaire.com/

I know I am a newbie, but I might have something to add - Herman can elaborate on if this is an issue - March is prime cruiseship season

March 17, 2011 Caribbean Princess 3100 Princess Cruises
March 18, 2011 Grandeur of the Seas 2446 Celebrity/RCCL
March 23, 2011 Constellation 2034 Celebrity/RCCL
March 23, 2011 Noordam 1918 HAL
March 24, 2011 Queen Victoria 1980 Cunard
March 25, 2011 Sea Princess 2016 Princess Cruises

Does this create a traffic problem if you were to stay at Bel Mar (south side) closer to to the cruise ship peir vs staying at Buddy (north side)?

Buddy Dive looks great to me. Having a bar/restaurant right at the hotel for us to gather as a group is a convenient feature for socializing as a group.

Speaking only for myself..... You are doing all the leg work and making the arrangements so I have no problem with you taking the comp spot free for yourself. Seems only fair to me.

I vote Buddy, the bar does it for me. Even with Douche's massive liver, I still prefer the bar.

I really hope Anna will be back for this, because I am going to feel like a crappy person if I go three weeks or so before she gets home. I know that's nobody's problem but mine though.

Then you will just have to go again with her. A little "alone" time might be needed by both of you.

March is simply the Sand Dog tradition (even thought the name was coined in August) It is not set in stone and we can be flexible. If making it later by a few weeks helps get more divers on the trip then by all means do it.

Well, I've been stuck in Kansas for too long. Unless hell freezes over, count me and my wife in. And I like the Buddy dive place, too.

I've been trying to find a flight, without luck so far. What companies operate out of Bonaire?

The two times I have gone I have flown the continental red eye out of newark (they also fly out of Houston on sat or sun). Other options are a sat flight on delta from ATL, inselair from Miami on sat, or fly into Curacao and then hop an island hopper (DAE, Divi Divi, or insel air) to Bonaire.

My vote is the Buddy location. At least one maybe two if the better half can get off from teeaching (which I doubt). So one for now. Will check with others to see.
First dives? 1967 and I never lost the fever.

I hope to make it (and meet more of y'all). All depends on dates for work, etc but looks good so far.

I can do a primer on flights and how to get there later. For now the basic options are Continental redeyes out of Houston or Newark, Delta (usually a higher price), Insel Air from Miami or get to Curacao or Aruba via many of the major airlines then take an island hopper over ($100ish round trip). I have done all but the Insel air route and each has its advantages. Air will be on each indivigual to get for themselves but I am more than happy to help you find flights.

Based on the responces so far, it's Buddy hands down so looks like I can confirm Buddy. I still need some idea of how many are coming and if you care to share a room and/or condo. As you can see from the rates above, 2 in a 1br is a good bit more expensive than 4 in a 2 BR. It's not a problem for me either way but I do need to have to know if you want a 1 br, otherwise I am going to hold 2br units.

As for the comped spot, how do the rest feel about giving it to Anna if she is back in time? She deserves it IMO, a thank you for her service to us all.

Barb,Rob, Eva and I already planned on sharing a 2 bedroom (if Rob does not snore) and it does save some $$$

I agree 110% with your idea on the comp for Anna...Excellent idea!

How's the shore diving right off Buddy's?

Also, I like the idea of this being a welcome home trip for Anna and giving her the comp space! Hopefully the date can be worked out for that.
