Proper placement of Voit Label

Thu Feb 14, 2008 3:40 pm

I was wondering if anyone knew the proper height placement for a the Voit label on a Steel 72. I have recently had two of them hooked up on a 1970's vintage US Divers Twin manifold and back pack, one tank is a US divers and one is a Dacor. I plan on painting them white and making them "look" like Voit tanks. Also what is the proper shade of white I need to give them that Voit look. You should've seen the look on the LDS staff's faces when asked them to hook up those tanks and revealed what I planned on using it for. they were like, You to do "WHAT  !!!!

P.S. I also wanted to say hi to all, as I am knew to the forum and have only within the last year and a half taken Vintage Diving seriously. I've been interested in it since I was 5 though when I first saw the movie "Of Sharks and Men".

As for color, I will allow more knowledgeable Voit enthusiasts to help you.

Welcome and don't worry about the amount of info you possessed. I have hardly any and have been treated here with nothing but kindness and great info. :)

Welcome to the vintage community.

I am not sure about the painting of the tanks, if they are galvanized perhaps leave them be. Your right though, the white looks good, I incorrectly placed a Voit label on my new white Fabers  .

Anyone have a paint suggestion for our new Voit diver?

I was planning on using rustoleom in a glossy white for my paint job. Is this a big no no or is it acceptable.

The original white Voit tanks were all vinyl coated. But just about any gloss white should do. I had one set of my Voit twin 50s painted with gloss white, and they look great.
As for decal placement, up high on the tank as per the catalogs is of course correct, but on a lot of the tanks the decal was placed low, as seen in the movie Thunderball. I have several 72s still with original decals, and some are up high, while the others are almost to the bottom of the tank...

Position of tank lables depends on what harness pr back back was in use. With the old 2 band web harness it would have to be between or below the bands. I think between was the most common. With the single band back pack I was above the band.

If you put the decal up high on the shoulder and use the tank with a Voit SnugPack like the one in the catalog picture the tank band will cover the decal when the tank is properly positioned between the shoulders---notice how high the tank is worn to keep it from being covered--wrong! Like Captain says, better figure out what harness system you intend to use.

I'll be using a US Divers twin backpack, 70's vintage, untill I can spare enough cash for one of those twin harnesses. I just have to many hobbies: modern diving, vintage diving, hunting/fishing, firearms, and the obligatory college courses. But as they say, "Mans gotta do something  ".

Here are two of my Voit 72s. Both have original labels, and both were made in 3/63. As you can see, decal placement was wherever the guy at the factory felt like putting them on any given day...

Very nice! Now all you need are some Voit or USD decals to trick them out.. 8)
