Paint or Powder coat

Mon Jan 14, 2008 5:26 pm

I have just acquired a newly rebuilt DA and a Voit 50 Fathom for the price of a good modern single hose. Some of the paint is peeling off of the Voit, would it be better to have it repainted by someone who can match the color or have it powder coated.
Now to find gray hoses and a mouthpiece.

Greg Barlow repainted a 50 fathom a year or so back and it looks creamy. PM him for details. I am sure he will be glad to help you out with your project. See the paint job in his Gallery pics.

I also wonder what the vintage community thinks about powder coating regs.
Would it totally destroy the value of the reg? For that matter would repainting destroy the value of the reg?

To serious collectors a repainted 50 Fathom is probably worth a lot less than one with minty original paint. I get my regs because I want to go diving with them. That I ended up with a collection as a by-product is purely coincidental.
Personally I'd rather have a cherry looking powdercoated one than an original, with flaking off paint..
Quick Robin, to the Voitmobile!

I think it's Karl that has a bright yellow Aquamaster that looks pretty cool. That was a powder coat I'm pretty sure. It may have lost it's collectors value, but if I was in the market for a reg to dive, I'd buy it in a heat beat! I maintain a small collection myself, nothing like karl's. Mines a whooping eight reg's. My criteria is more heavily weighed on function. Everything I have either I have restored or gone through, or had Bryan or Dan do so.
If I can't actually dive it, it does lose some appeal to me. To each his or her own or as Bryan says, your experience may vary.

Depends on who does the powdercoating. I've seen a few that IMO were ruined....Karls was done really well. Coating must be thin and even and remember when you coat these parts the thickness of the coating changes how the parts fit and work together.
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB

I can supply you with the DuPont paint codes if you desire to paint it. Personally, I wouldn't powdercoat a 50 Fathom due to their scarcity. Plus, if you ever want to remove powdercoating in the future, it is a tough proposition.

If you don't want to take on the painting, contact me. I would gladly give it a new loving home, complete with new paint.
