DR Christian Lambertsen, Pioneering diver and inventor, While he did a variety of things in his life, one of the best known for is coining the acronym SCUBA ( Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) in addition to his creation of actual scuba gear in 1939.
Rejected for use by the USN,his later underwater unit known as the "Lambertsen Underwater Respiratory Unit"or LARU (Lah-roo) and was used by the OSS World War 2 but was tested and approved for use by the USN in 1948 referred to as a Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus or SCUBA (tests by the Naval Experimental Unit for use with the first UDT submersible platoon, headed by Cdr F.Fane went public in 1952)
That said years ago I found the only article published about the "Lambertsen Unit" in the April 1946
Popular Science Magazine titled "Fun Underwater, war gear of "frogman" will create new sport, save lives."
which I had published in the spring 2013 Historical Diving Society magazine.
