voit 50 fathom

Thu Nov 28, 2013 3:19 am

this is my new project. it has no audible air leaks and seems to breath easy sucking on the can hooked up to a tank. I would like to service it but want to make sure I'm ordering the right parts. I read somewhere on here about one has four bolts and the modified two bolts. will the new diaphragm for my da hpr work, I see high pressure seats for voit 50 fathoms on vdh are those the right ones and the voit rebuild kit too? I assume since the hose is the same it will use the same duck bill. I also notice the main air outlet is not pointed to the hose bib, did someone not put it together right?

I wrote a newsletter article that covered many aspects of the 50 Fathom downstream system. I suggest that you go to the "Manuals and Catalogs" tab and then to "Newsletter Articles". You can then download the entire article. I have rebuilt a significant number of the downstream mechanisms, and have a great respect for the design. The majority of my vintage DH dives are made on Voit 50 Fathom regulators.

Than you. My biggest question was if it was downstream or what.

- Greg helped me with my 50 Fathom, too. It is now one of my favorite regulators... Both for being so unique in its downstream mechanism, and for the fact that I find it to be a very good breather... A fine regulator.

Slightly off tangent here, but did I read this correctly to mean that you inhaled directly off the horn from a pressurized reg without a hose or bypass system?

Yes I did. Takes a lot of skill but it can be done.

It bears occasionally repeating but I would not put my mouth directly to a single stage Mistral or such or really any dh regulator. That is seriously dangerous. I really, really, really mean it too.

It possibly could blow your lungs out your rear exhaust if you follow

I am not kidding. Please kids, no!

Seeing TV and movies we can do all sorts of crazy things but in real life driving a Porche Carrera at illegal speeds on a road posted at 40MPH is fatal. I liked that guy. I do not care if Mike Nelson, a fictional character, or that guy in Into the Blue breathed off a tank or a single stage can horn or whatever :( .

I am not making fun of anyone, back in college I took anatomy and paleontology and all that stuff. I became enthralled at how similar a human was to a worm despite millions and millions of years of divergent evolution, simply a tube, just slightly more complex with a mammal but there is an inside and an outside. Unless you want what is on your inside on your outside, STOP doing that  .

It might make a real mess.

everything looked like it cleaned up nice but does anyone have any ideas about removing the rock hard melted on duck bill from out of the horn? How does Bryon do it. I thought about trying my heat gun. Also is it a bad idea to re paint it if it seems to work ok. The paint is chipping off in a couple parts and I think it would hold up better without exposed copper in the salt water.

Using the search function in the vintage diving section I entered two keywords.
Cleaning and Duckbill. It returned several pages of good posts on the subject.

Listen to Nemrod and you will live to dive another day... :)

I have had success removing the stuck duckbill mess with MEK. You can get it at hardware stores in most places, possibly not California. I have also chipped at it with a plastic/nylon instrument. I think that the composition of that stuff should be studied by NASA as possibly being of alien source.

Check out Gilldiver's post of Feb 22, 2007, posted as Non Solvent Duckbill Remover.

I found his hot water method to be very helpful. :)
