something to go with your double hose military reg?

Sun Apr 29, 2012 4:26 pm

Not sure if this belongs here but I think some will enjoy the pics. A friend of mine is trying to find a manual for this outboard motor. The story was the motor came from a veteran UDT diver who served in 3 wars but for all I know there are thousands of these. The motor is supposed to be a navy issue Korean war era outboard motor modified to either make it silent, temporarily submersible, or both. The plan is to start it up but only after it’s cleaned of sand and properly lubed. If not a military manual he would be happy with the commercial version's manual but he does not know the year, brand or horse power. Any suggestions would be welcome.

It has a cast aluminum cowling bolted and gasketed to be water proof. The two doors have o-rings. Inside is in good shape and everything inside and out is painted Navy gray. There is a bit of fine sand apparently from a San Diego beach. There are zero commercial markings anywhere. A very small handmade copper name plate added to the motor has the 1/8" tall numbers 487. All controls, including the throttle, have been moved inside cast aluminum housing except the shift. It has two cylinders, weighs 80lbs and has an 8" two bladed prop. The bottom half and internal controls look similar to a 1954-ish Evinrude. A leather wrist holder is tied to a clip that when pulled shuts off the air intake to the motor. There is a commercial type pressurized fuel tank designed for motors without a fuel pump painted Navy gray. The commercial throttle was in the tiller handle. The original throttle grip looks like it was removed on purpose. It appears the choke knob linkage has been modified for another purpose, possible a throttle. The front and rear doors have o-rings. Cast cowling has water tight gasket to motor. Modified internal parts are often in stainless steel. Looks like valves have been built into the exhaust ports but I could be wrong on this (see last pic).

Not sure what these are but they look like valves.

Interesting motor. Looks pretty heavy duty and I reckon it was used to power Zodiacs on sub lock-outs or something similar. I have never seen anything like it before. I hope somebody will chime in who knows about it. I think it will be a neat project.

I have a couple of those old pressure tanks I used with some 50's era Evinrudes and Johnson engines. They are also pretty collectable.

Wow, that's just too cool. As the old saying goes, if you want to get somewhere fast, buy a Mercury. If you want to get home, buy a Johnson/Evinrude. It would figure that the UDT folk would use a Johnson/Evinrude motor. Cousteau did too. So do I!

Based on the carburetor and position of the choke it is looking like this started off as a 1954 Evinrude fleetwin but I am sure what sizes were available. Anyone want to guess what horse power would be expected from a 80lb outboard from 1954?

The cast top plate that accepts the cast cowling is divided in to a front casting and a back casting. The font casting has a cast in part number: 287-819. If I could find a parts list I should be able to dial in an exact model.

Yes, this is a motor built for UDT's> It is used to power the 12' IBS (inflatable boat small). This motor is made for silent running and is rated 7.5 HP@4000 rpm. It is also water "resistant". I found this info in the UDT/Seal handbook 1969.

Hi,

Great web page for old outboards. I will look into it.

This page has some photos launching Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC) from a dry dock shelter attached to the deck of a sub. The photo of an outboard being brought up was also in the book "US Navy SEALs in San Diego". The fins date the photos a few decades after 1954.

The last line credits at least some of the photos to some guy named Bernie.

7.5 hp :?:

seems like a lot of men, rubber, and things that go bang/boom to be pushing with that... :? what do their boats use these days?

the silent-running part sounds darn cool. Is the prop a special modified shape?

Hi,
I think the prop is stock. There is some neoprene shielding on the portion below the engine. It looks like valves to close/open the exhaust and air intake. After that it looks like 1/8" thick cast aluminum cowling bolted and gasketed. I think the thing may start because it looks like it was well maintained. The current mystery is the throttle. The grip and geared rod inside the tiller handle is missing but it looks like it could be missing by design. Could be you want to prevent revs when you want stealth. We have instructions for carb adjustments but most suggest rebuilding the carb. The internal throttle parts are there so I am looking for a throttle. Once a throttle and carb rebuild kit is found we will see what happens.
