Stock Paint Color for Vot 50 Fathom

Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:43 pm

Earlier today I had an email from Al Klauda inquiring about the paint I used for the painting of my Voit 50 Fathom a few months ago. After receiving his email I remembered that I had forgotten to post this info for any of you who might be restoring one of these regs. First of all I have to give all of the credit to my wife Roxann for the great job that she did, and the fact that this reg turned out great. First of all she used a self etching primer; made by Autobody Products; Gray #9988. For the blue color coat she used Duplicolor Truck, Van & SUV spray paint; color #T0359 Intense Blue Pearl. I obtained both of these spray paints right off the shelf at Thirlby's Auto Parts Store, and I'm sure other auto parts stores carry them as well. After these were applied she then finished it off with a clear coat; Premium Decor Clear Gloss which I obtained at the store where I work which is also a True Value Hardware as well as a lumber yard. This can be obtained at any True Value Store and the product code is 792-264. The day that I purchased the paint I also had the reg cans with me for comparison of matching color. When Rox and I took the reg cans and the can of spray paint outside to compare in the daylight there was absolutely no difference in color with the cans or the cap color on the spray paint, and now that the job is done I would go so far as to say it was a PERFECT match. :D As per application; when she applied the primer she applied two light coats, and then several light coats of the color coat with 2 or 3 (don't remember) light coats of the clear coat. While she was doing the painting she made sure that extra attention was paid to how much she applied to the rim areas of both cans keeping in mind that this was important so that all would fit well when finished. The job came out Great and there was no problem in putting the cans together and reinstalling the band clamp. I've been wanting to post some pictures; but the ones I have I'm not really that satisfied with, and I don't feel that they do justice to how good it looks. Hope this info helps some of you who are restoring any Voit 50 Fathom (blue can) regs! 8) Terry

Thanks for the great information. I was wondering about what kind of paint should be used. Now I know!
