Maybe the next vintage item for VDH is a "Wham" point.

I think with such a device we could get the entire forum membership banned from Florida---forever!

Sam, you have the best tales, and better yet, they are all factual accounts.

You know, I think , you know, I might have been a little reluctant to go for those hot donuts, a second time.

Exactly! Great story Sam.

- Hey Sam, just so you know there are a heck of a lot of us out here that enjoy reading your stories but don't always submit a comment. In my case, I guess I don't often feel qualified to contribute to the conversation... I was 10 years old in '64 and only a fair weather diver in all the time since then. Certainly I'm a "Wannabe" and a "Wish-I-Was"...
- Anyway, I enjoy the heck out of your stories and hope you will continue to share them with us. :D

Apparently there are only two people enjoy eye witness tales from yesteryear during the dawn of recreational diving.

If you share stories like this because you want to pass along information that is important to understanding the history of scuba diving here in the US and the colorful incidents and characters that surround them you have found a large and very receptive audience.

If you share them with the expectations of receiving public accolades I can understand your disappointment.

I appreciate what you share with us and I know many others do as well. If everyone who has read the story above had commented on it we would have hundreds of responses. Most of the folks that post here only do so when they have something useful to add to the subject being discusses. Quite the opposite of other website forums where people run their mouth just to see what they said pop up on the screen.

I'll second that. I've read all of your posts Dr. Miller, and reference your posts and articles from the legend site fairly often.

I also want to let you know that this isn't the first I have heard about this. In the early/mid 90's I spent a weekend diving with some friends in Monterey and one of the divers told me this story. (Sadly, I forget the guys name, but he was a metallurgust at Lawrence Livermore if that narrows it down.)

Anyway, I remember the doughnut detail, perhaps becuase we were cold and craving some of Red's.

I am sad to report that only the shooter in this case is still behind bars. The wife, daughter and boyfriend have all been paroled. One more reason for me to think our court system is nothing more than a yellow bellied farce:
