Cerakoting?

Wed Jan 01, 2014 9:18 pm

Just playing around with an idea and looking to see if anyone else has experimented with this to any success. I recently had a firearm refinished with Cerakote, http://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/, and am thinking about running a set of beat-up cans through the process with for the "satin aluminum" finish. I've included and image of the cans to show what I'm looking at. Any thoughts?

I also have also thought of trying Cerakote or Duracote. It is a lot cheaper than chrome.

PVD coatings are very popular with scuba gear manufactures right now. During my Zeagle visit they showed me some black chrome Onyx 1st stages....They did not care to share a lot of details on the plating process but it was nice to see the parts before assembly. Robert K has done some GunKote (sp) finishes on a couple of regulators he was diving in Cozumel they looked great but I didn't get any details from him on the process.
I am actively seeking a protective finish other than chrome for the future of the Argonaut line.

I have coated a barrel, but it made MC really mad when she found pieces all in her oven and kitchen.

Not sure about the brass substrate. Need to look into that. From Duracote:

Brass Apply directly over,
Use only for low wear applications (Display only)

I have noticed a few parts being done in some sort of black coating. On hose fittings from XS for example. I am sure it is a replacement for chrome (since EPA is making it difficult).

Yes, I am curious too. I am not satisfied with powder coating, I do not think vapor coating work on brass, there has to be an alternative process.

Uh, you could make the Argonauts titanium   , no coating needed.

Okay, just send a send a missile my way, here are the coordinates----

We'll soon find out how Cerakote fairs. In the name of science I, possibly, sacrificed my spare Aquamaster and got the guys at Area-15 to run it through. They said it should be done in the next 3-4 days so expect pictures and a review 3-7 days from now, depending on my mental state if my regulator comes back as slag. :? If all turns out for the best, I talked to the guys at the shop and they said that they would be more than happy to do other regs too. I can't give a price point as to what they would charge but it was less than $100.

Ok, this should be a fair example of turn around time for the company I used, AREA-15. I dropped the cans off on the 5th and got it back today. The cans came back fully sealed and looking nearly flawless. Chris, from AREA-15, called earlier in the afternoon and asked if I wanted them to make the cans smooth and shine. I chose to leave the cans with the raw look to them and I think it ended up looking pretty good. I asked the guys, Chris and Steve, if they would be willing to do other cans and they said that they were more than willing so here is their information for any interested:
Area-15; (480) 832-9796

I've Duracoated my can but not sure I could dive with...

More seriously, the Duracoat could be an interesting solution, but need to be well equipped with a good paint spray gun. Also it is good to know that Duracoat required a drying of no less than 6 months before became enough hard to resist to several mechanical friction. Especially for an underwater use, I guess. I've primarly think about Cerakoting prior to decide to use the Duracoat, but it needs to put the object in a oven... :?

I had a long conversation with the folks at the Cerakote main office http://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/

They shared some very promising results and information with me. I am having some parts professionally done by them and if results are as good as they say, this will be the coating I'll be using from here on out. EPA is putting chrome in the US out of business and beyond the reach of most people.
I'll share the results of testing as I progress.

That is a nice A1 series "can" jiguad. :) I'm sure you could dive it in a tactical applications. On a lighter note, we just got my girlfriend's rifle back and I thought that it is a great example of the color flexibility of the Cerakote in case someone might want something a little different in their can color..

What condition were the cans in when you dropped them off? Did you have to do any prep work?

More precisely a CAR15 can, grandfather of the modern M4. To reassure you, it's not a real one, but an airsoft rifle with a home made make up. The AR15 is one of the rarest Colt M16 and I will be the luckiest man in the world to own one! I like your girlfriend's rifle too! Hello Kitty Colt's classic! :D

I'm a firearms fanatic as many of you know but this is Vintage Double Hose....Please, no more posting or discussion of firearms PERIOD. There are plenty of places to discuss the subject but VDH is not one of them. The subject attracts more douchbags than a sports bar on game day.
