Greetings from a new member

Mon Nov 04, 2013 12:56 pm

I've always had a "Thing" for old two-hose regulators and had no idea there were so many people out there that shared my interest. I was trained under the now defunct NASDS program back in 1972 and held on to my old two hose until succumbing to peer pressure and transitioning over to a Scubapro Mark VII "Honker." I've always been a little slow to keep up with evolving technology, having held on to my old horse collar until just recently. Until this summer, the only diving I'd done for the last 20 years has been shallow water light commercial with surface supplied air in near zero visibility water. This summer I decided to get back into sport diving and with my old Mark VII non-rebuildable, I was forced to purchase new equipment. I was baffled by all the new equipment designed to replace brainpower and physical fitness. The only gear left over from the glory days of my youth are 4 circa-1972 air cylinders that continue to pass hydro and visuals. Now I'm on a quest to secure serviceable vintage diving equipment and relive the good old days. Would enjoy hearing from vintage equipment divers, particularly from North Carolina. Look forward to running into some of you on vintage equipment events.

Welcome to the board Charles.
As Fred said, Henry is in Goldsboro and I am in Raleigh. It's getting a little late in the year but we do a lot of DH diving at the quarry near Raleigh.
I hope you still have the honker, contrary to what you were told, it is servicable, Bryan has the kits. Most of us, at least the active ones on the board are DIY service techs. I know there are 2 very experienced members who do a lot with the MK-5 which is very similar to the MK-7 and more than happy to help you get it serviced.

When looking for a double hose, I suggest you limit your search to a DA Aquamaster (aka- DA or DAAM), at least for your first reg. They are the most common, least expensive and easy to service. Now if you get a chance at a RAM (Royal Aquamaster), Mistal or any Voit at a great price grab it, they are great regs but since RAMs and Voits tend to sell for a lot more cash and the Mistral is more limited on modifications you can do to it, those regs are better choices for your 3rd or 4th or XXXth. One is not enough. Avoid Healthways and Dacors, they are a lot more difficult to get back into good working order, esp the Dacors. If you can get they at a real cheap price fine, resale them and use the money for a better choice, otherwise pass on them for now.
