I support Warnock's Dilemma

Fri Feb 22, 2013 8:40 pm

The problem with no response is that there are five possible interpretations:

The post is correct, well-written information that needs no follow-up commentary. There's nothing more to say except "Yeah, what he said."

The post is complete and utter nonsense, and no one wants to waste the energy or bandwidth to even point this out.

No one read the post, for whatever reason.

No one understood the post, but won't ask for clarification, for whatever reason.

No one cares about the post, for whatever reason.

Warnock's Dilemma, named for its originator Bryan Warnock, is the problem of interpreting a lack of response to a posting on a mailing list, Usenet newsgroup, or Web forum. It occurs because a lack of response does not necessarily imply that no one is interested in the topic, and could have any one of several different implications, some of which are contradictory. Commonly used in the context of trying to determine why a post has not been replied to, or to refer to a post that has not been replied to.
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB

OK, I'll call... What are we talking about??? :?

No recent unanswered posts about anything to do with anything... nobody that's a member named Warnock...

Is everybody else just in on the joke but me, Nem, and Easy??? :( :( :(

Edit:

upon reflection, I've decided that I support whatever it is that's going on, though I have not clue #1, but only because I think Bernie has reasonably good judgement, and I'm easily talked into things... Should we make up some picket signs or something? or a nice button to wear? :|

I'm confused, but that could be because I'm getting old..Does this have anything to do with the airspeed velocity of a laden swallow?

Bernie is a smart guy. I'll give you guys a hint. Read Bernie's post (the original post), then ONLY read Bryan's post. There you have it.

I was not cyber-hip enough for the meme-ness of the post, but google knows everything.

Looks like there's a bit of Poe's Law in this thread about Warnock's Dilemma... Recursive sociology, how fun.
