Eva and I tried to dive a location called Spanish Rocks off of Holmes beach today. Beautiful day sunny day in the high 80’s water temp 85 and we were hitting the beach just about high tide….All was good till we go out of the car and found that we had about a 10mph wind coming off the water and 2-3” seas.
Not to be deterred we swam out towards the buoy and we kept swimming and swimming. I was pulling the big flag with the covered inner tube buoy and quickly realized it was more of a sail pulling me backwards than it was a deterrent to boat traffic. We did our best to make it but without letting go of the dive flag float it was not going to happen.
On our way out of the water we were stopped by someone who was asking about dive conditions visibility etc. He started talking about my double hose and I told him who I was and he says HEY I know all about you from Scuba Board You are the guy that makes all the stuff they are talking about….He also noticed Eva was diving with 109’s and I explained we were diving out here today because we were headed to PCB in a couple of weeks and Eva had never used a BCD before and I wanted her to have a chance to get comfortable….He just stood and shook his head in disbelief and amazement. Eva told him it was the truth and until today she had been diving only vintage….
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
