Rebreather divers are an interesting animal. Every time I go to Ginnie, I see some. They look at me like I am in a loin cloth, then I look at them like they are wearing a tuxedo to a McDonalds. It takes all kinds.

That picture is the perfect example of why dive vintage. NOT having 47 hoses, D-rings, umpteen bottles hanging off you, and having to constantly fret over gauges, readouts etc throughout every dive is one of the main reasons I dive vintage.
Not to mention that vintage gear is infinitely cooler than anything made today (and a hell of a lot cheaper).. 8)

That rig will let you stay down a long, long time - but only to 30' with excursions down as deep as 90’ for limited amounts of time.

Dave, anyone who dives a LAR of any flavor is not "a rebreather diver", they are a frogman. Key differences include hose cutting, chest mounting, really short shorts with no underwear, physical fitness, the proper attitude, and the ability to drink heavily. You are the latter my friend.

This is pretty wimpy compared to all the other posts, but I thought it fitting for the initial question....

So, why do we dive vintage.....

Sunday I had my two nieces for the day. They start SCUBA lessons this weekend. I've been gearing them up and putting them in the pool to break them in. We were at an event on Sunday and we had pre-agreed that if they were good I would let them gear up to SCUBA in the pool that afternoon. Since I had loaned out one of my modern regs, I told them that one girl would have to dive my vintage gear. The youngest (my little fish) quickly said, "me, me, me." We ended up staying a little longer than planned at the event and I got the following text to remind me of the day's priorities:

"I want to go swim in your vintage because the underwater world is my happy place."

Oh, the clarity of a ten year old.

My wife saw this picture the other day. She said something to the effect of "OMG! I could never get back to the surface with all that cabbage" It probably weighs twice as much as she does. (I know, it probably has a floatation device somewhere). She is a confirmed vintage diver. She likes the simplicity and getting back to the basics. She has always emphasized skills over gear.

Scubalady: I see you are properly educating your nieces, they sound like they have their priorities straight. :D
