I made the trek North this weekend to Portage Quarry. 500 hundred swimmers and 12 Scuba Divers!!
Unfortunate for Portage more Divers were not showing up but it was to Cavemans and my advantage. Visibility was over 25 feet in most places, the Bass were starving for you to feed them along the North Wall and we could still not quite make out the jet from the surface. Surface temps wer near 80 and the thermocline started right at 16 -17 feet. Visibility was a little better under the thermocline. Temps dropped to the 50s at about 25 - 45 feet. Jeff and Mike were both there. Fill station was opena nd snacks and drinks still available in the Dive Shop. As always we were met with a smile and a story from Jeff and Mike.
The facilities were in good shape and I think visibility was better than last year. Mike had this huge camera he was taking pictures on land but of what i will leave to your imagination
. I did meet another diver that is slowly being converted to the vintage side. He had a chance to dive with USDiver at White Star last year and plans on attending the legends weekend. Unfortunately not a lot of Legends are being brought in due to the poor showing in the past years. But at any rate I plan on attending once again to see some of those I have not seen for a year.
There is a little Leage Tournament in the area that weekend and rooms are becoming scarce. I checked availability yesterday and the Days Inn has s few rooms left and the Best Western is down to sinlge King Beds that has smoking rooms.
First dives? 1967 and I never lost the fever.
