Roll-Call for Portage 2013

Tue Jul 02, 2013 10:04 am

Howdy Ho there,

Was wondering about who thought they would be able to make it to Portage this year...

I'm planning on it, and have my reservation at the Best Western :D

BTW, if you're going and haven't booked a room, you might oughta get on it because they're just about full... can't imagine what the draw is that weekend as school isn't starting yet until a week after that Monday... so maybe it will be a banner year at Legends of Diving... or maybe word's just out what a wonderful tourist destination Bowling Green is...

Made my res at the Best Western this evening. Let's hope the viz at Portage is a little better this year! At least I know it will be fun rubbing elbows with the attendee's. That's what really makes the event anyway.

We'll be there, probably from Thursday night. Traveling with the wife means that we'll be staying at a place that caters more to her likings, We've booked at the Hampton Inn in Perrysburg. Can't wait to see and dive with our old friends, as well as meeting a few new ones.

I made the trek North this weekend to Portage Quarry. 500 hundred swimmers and 12 Scuba Divers!! :D Unfortunate for Portage more Divers were not showing up but it was to Cavemans and my advantage. Visibility was over 25 feet in most places, the Bass were starving for you to feed them along the North Wall and we could still not quite make out the jet from the surface. Surface temps wer near 80 and the thermocline started right at 16 -17 feet. Visibility was a little better under the thermocline. Temps dropped to the 50s at about 25 - 45 feet. Jeff and Mike were both there. Fill station was opena nd snacks and drinks still available in the Dive Shop. As always we were met with a smile and a story from Jeff and Mike. The facilities were in good shape and I think visibility was better than last year. Mike had this huge camera he was taking pictures on land but of what i will leave to your imagination 8) . I did meet another diver that is slowly being converted to the vintage side. He had a chance to dive with USDiver at White Star last year and plans on attending the legends weekend. Unfortunately not a lot of Legends are being brought in due to the poor showing in the past years. But at any rate I plan on attending once again to see some of those I have not seen for a year.
There is a little Leage Tournament in the area that weekend and rooms are becoming scarce. I checked availability yesterday and the Days Inn has s few rooms left and the Best Western is down to sinlge King Beds that has smoking rooms.

Henry and I are not going to make it this year....instead we are being forced into a long horrible week testing an Argonaut on Bonaire. Bad job but somebody has to do it. :)
Be safe and have fun.

- I am sorry to report, I procrastinated too long and the decision has been made for me. I will not be coming to Portage.
- The same thing happened last year... To drive it means a minimum 5-6 day commitment: Two days driving, two days at the event, and two days driving home. I left the decision open thinking I might "justify" the time off from work or take a short cut and fly... And by the time it was getting close, the weekend had been scheduled with two big family events I can't get out of.

Household 6 and I are going to be there Friday, hopefully around dinner time. We will dive Saturday and Sunday, then leave Monday. I plan on bringing my hammock, my SCUBA stuff, and scotch. I also plan on pestering Roger for cowboy coffee.

I will be bringing a few things, including some doubles, for the swap meet :)

We can't wait to see all of you again :)
