interesting doubles idea

Tue Apr 10, 2012 12:46 am

Thought I'd run this by you guys.

I found two sets of not-so-vintage ('82 and '85) doubles on Ebay that are similar to the set in photo below. I was thinking it would be possible to add a DIN to yoke adapter (3rd photo below) and get this to work with my soon-to-be-coming DAAM. These are tanks are designed to be worn with the valves down, but I think they will work just as well with the valves up. The DIN valve faces inwards as in the 2nd photo and the adapter would require the yoke fitting of the first stage to be rotated 90 degrees...hard to describe here. Is this possible?

I'm not sure you mean exactly the same tanks but I think those Divators are rated to 4410psi (300bars) working pressure. May make an unbalanced DAAM a little hard to breath

Yes, thanks Dale. It is probably worth mentioning that these have a capacity of 4 Liters each, unpressurized (at 1 atmosphere) and are rated for 300 bar.

Of course, filling these to 300 bar or 4351 psi would not only be impractical (I do have access to a HP compressor that could do this) and one would have to be very careful that any fitting like a DIN to yoke or even the yoke clamp OR the DAAM's 1st stage would be strong enough....it I'm guessing it would also be too great a pressure for many regs to work well with it- vintage or otherwise.

At a more realistic fill of 3000-3500 psi, the capacity of the tanks will of course be reduced. I estimated (hopefully correctly) that they would hold a little over 33 cubic feet each at 3500 psi, about 66 cubic feet doubled-up. This would be plenty of gas for much of my diving and work with most regs.

I'm pretty certain that these have metric tank valves and that it might be impossible to get these hydro'd but I would feel comfortable leaving them unhydro'd, doing my own visual inspections and filling these from a HP whip off the compressor.

Cheers, Tim

Tim,

Would it be a better option for you to use a chest mounted DH harness? The first photo shows what looks like an air block, so you could simply run a hose form the tank valve to the block and then you'de be free to mount what ever you wanted form there.

I thought of that but the can will get in the way of my drysuit valve.

Unfortunately, this a mental exercise only- I lost the bid by 5 dollars. It is unlikely to find another set for anything near as affordable. These interspiro tank blocks are still listed as available new- I couldn't find a price anywhere.
