Twin 27s ?

Thu Oct 28, 2010 12:46 pm

I am beginning to think about putting together a set of twins for my wife. I looked at the Catalina 40s , and they are too long for her. She is less than 5' tall, so needs a scaled down set of tanks. Maybe the 30s might be better. I have found that XS Scuba makes a steel 27. Has anyone made twins from this tank? Is the 3/4" or 1/2" thread the same as used on the modern tanks? How interchangeable are twin manifolds? This will be my first twin build.

Bill the 27's are the 3/4"... cyl ht, excluding the valve, approx 14.5 in, dia is 5.5 in... the service pressue is 2400+... any good 3/4" twin manifold will work. The harness, may present a problem... if you do make up a set of twin's... contact: Simonbeans [ Allan ]

Thanks for the lead on 27 cf tanks. I have an old Nemrod 27 cf I set up with a vintage harness and bands back in the 80's. I've been concerned that I won't be able to use it due to its old age. The XS 27 look like a nearly identical replacement.

Thanks Mistral. that is the information that I needed. They will be the perfect size for her. I might try a single with a basket harness for her ( she doesn't breath much :D ), till I can afford to get a second one. She just got a harness from Simonbeans for her Luxifer, and they are great.

This is a dive buddy using twin 26s at our vintage scuba course. She is still very fit at 54 but likes short tanks. She normally uses the short Fabers. They are inverted because they a used with the 1956 Scubmatic regulator made in Australia, and decanting was the air management system back then. The tanks are 1800 psi and tend to float. They are hard to find now and I don't think they can be tested in the USA. They were common when I was a newbie, and were my first set of tanks. They were originally made from WWII aircraft O2 bottles.

The shortest tank I think that would be practical would be the Sea Hunt type twin 38 cu ft tanks. They were mostly 1800 psi models too. They would be a more practical choice I would think.
