Sticky Duckbills

Fri May 26, 2006 10:42 pm

I got a couple of regulators off e-bay, and I am trying to rebuild them.

What is the best way to remove the old, sticky duckbills and the residual rubber that is left? Do I just scrap away, or would the VDH cleaning solution help take it off?

I already have an Aqua Master I purchased from Bryan that I plan on diving, the others are just projects to keep me busy.

Thanks for your ongoing help.

Soak it in laquer thinner, it will desolve the old rubber.

Yikes! Make sure you soak the duckbill, and ONLY the duckbill, in the thinner if you have a decent looking ID plate!
I have removed old, dry, decades old, caked on duckbills from the inside of horns using a plastic knife. The little serrations do wonders and don't scratch the metal. I've never tried laquer thinner, but that is a great tip (using caution as mentioned). One of those "why didn't I think of that" things. :D

If I have not removed the label I also use the plastic scrapper method. Then I remove the remainder with a cloth and MEK. James
