DA Navy Approved is Balanced?

Fri Sep 19, 2014 10:53 am

I purchased a DA Navy Approved and was surprised to find it balanced.

What is odd is that the cans are satin but the yoke and 1st stage are chrome. Has anyone found DA Navies like this or could this have been a modification after manufacturing?

Someone put a Royal 1st stage on it. Is it a Navy approved body with the horseshoe 2nd stage? Quite possible it was simply built from available parts lying around.

For whatever reason, someone swapped out the first stage or like Bryan said, simply put parts together to make a reg. Add a photo of the insides.

I once got a DA off ebay and when it arrived I found a complete Royal Master (not RAM) first stage in it. I was very happy to see the parts but person I got it from claims he purchased it new and never had an upgrade done to it. I made it clear I was very happy to get the parts so there was no reason for him to lie about it.My guess is some shop screwed up and replaced the first stage with a spare they had....or had on the bench and got it by mistake.

I think Herman is probably on to something. I service modern regulators, and I have gotten some that have had some tinkering done to them. We had a batch of Air2's come in the other day, and none of them had any washers in them. It was like whoever repaired them last time (not us) just took all the washers out and threw them away. I have also seen people replace corroded parts with cannibalized parts from the bench or junk drawer. Maybe someone back in the day just felt like they were doing this guy a solid when they rebuild his DANA and threw a spare balanced HP nozzle in it. Score for you!

It looks like an early model RAM inside with a short spring block, no backup washer. The body has a hookah port. Black Kleer Easy mouthpiece, black hoses, nylon hose clamps (nutless.)

Based on what I see here, my guess is someone built it from parts on hand or had a early RAM with damaged cans and replaced them with the Navy cans. In any case, you have a reg you can work with.

After looking into this further, if the bottom can were a Navy it would orient the hookah port(/snub) away from the intake hose. This one looks like a DAAM. At best the top can is a Navy. I'm glad it was a reasonable price.

No matter what you got a deal and a cool reg.... Unless you want a stock original. I have thought of building the exact same just for fun.
