Issues Removing Ring Nut

Thu Apr 10, 2014 11:03 am

Sorry I deleted the threads....I was going to combine them and did it wrong....Please post here again.
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB

Sorry about the double threads, I'm not sure why that happened.

Anyways, after lurking on here for a little bit I figured I'd introduce myself and in the process ask a question. I recently started a small collection thanks to one of my regular buddies. So far we got a mistral rebuilt but when it came time for my DA Aquamaster, I ran into some issues. For some reason I can't seem to remove the ring nut. I have one of Hermans tools and with that it's not budging at all. Someone recommended using some penetrating oil and letting it sit for a while. I have it sitting as we speak but I was wondering if anyone else had any tips that might be helpful.

Thanks!

You can try a couple of things:

1. Let some penetrating oil work into the treads for a while.

2. Apply heat (carefully) after the oil has been allowed to work.

Heat always works if done correctly. I apply heat with a propane torch, every 30 seconds I remove the flame and spray a bit of Aero Croil until it is just hot enough to ignite the Aero Coil without the torch flame being present, extinguish the flame. Try to remove the fastener. If it is still tight repeat.
By heating and quenching with the Croil it tends to be drawn into the threads. You will not over heat the part if you stop heating when the Croil ignites without the help of the torch flame.
This also works on valves. I have never found any O rings or teflon seals or valve seats to be damaged doing this.

Thanks for the advice. After letting the penetrating the soak in for a day I finally was able to break it free.
