REAR VIEW MIRROR FOR SCUBA DIVERS FOR USE UNDERWATER

Over the years I have managed to aquire a number of unique diving items; some were prototypes others were production models.

None is more unique and useless as the rear view mirror that was not only designed and developed but was placed in to production and actually marketed--A rear view mirror for scuba divers for use underwater.

I recently un covered one in a box that had not been opened for at least 10 years--never used still in its original package.

The questions are

Who marketed it?

When?

I and many others are unaware that it had been warmed up and re introduced into the market place.

The one refered to in the post was introduced at least 35 years ago. So far as I can recall it was another total failure as a marketable diving product..

Walter, As you probably are aware, completed staff reports need include who, when, what and where.

So,
Who sells it?
When is/was it sold?
What is it's name?
Where may we find out about it?

Hi Sam

I think the mirror you are referring to was sold by Global Manufacturing Corporation (http://www.gmcscuba.com/ ). I don’t know this for a fact. Actually, the only reason I think it was from Global is because I vaguely remember seen one (back in the 70’s) at the dive shop were I used to work (Divers Service Center in Puerto Rico) and our normal supplier for diving accessories and diving gadgets was Global. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.

Good try! It is the type of thing that Global would market---but this predates the establishment of Global.

hint: the compamy was based in San Diego California and went out of business about the time Global entered the Market place.

I thought we were buying stuff from Global since early 70's, maybe as early as 1971. I may be wrong. I was only 14 when I started working at the dive shop.

I wish I new or could remember some of the odd deals the owner of the dive shop used to do. Occasionally we used to get some odd gear from Europe. I thought there was a distributor for Global in St. Thomas, V.I. for the Caribbean that would also import gear from Europe. I think that is how we were selling Fenzy's. I have had my Fenzy since around 1972.

At times we also carried some Nemrod gear, but parts were never easy to get. Nemrod had way to many different model regulators with different parts.

For a wile we were also importing Cressi rubber products (mask, fins, and snorkels) from Brazil; tons of fins.

It was Aqua Craft!

Established by Bob Mitchel in early 1960s. Aqua Craft Was located in San Diego and offered a variety of small items for the diver--Like the Rear view mirror for Scuba divers.

No I will not be wearing a rear view mirror.

However, I understand there are a lot of pirates around Portage Quarry, especially dangerous is that pirate crew lead by Sam & Sam. Therefore, I would suggest that you wear two rear view mirrors in order to keep track of your mermaid and bring an UW Glock to protect her from the evils that lurk in every cove and at every depth.

Aqua Craft's Model and the first model rear view mirrow for Scuba divers to be placed on the market was nothing more than a mirror worn on the wrist like a depth guage. It was encased in the popular black case used for most models of the capillary depth guages of that era. The area reserved for the depth guage was replaced with a unbreakable mirrored surface.

To use........ The diver was to hold up his arm and look ala automobile fashion in his rear view mirror....Functional? I don't know never used it --it is still in it's factory packaging.

As soon a Walter idenifies the manufacture of the modern version we can close this thread. It is up to you Walter .....

I miss Aqua Craft, it was your one stop shopping place for all sorts of stupid stuff, my weight belt buckle, all stainless, it is Aqua Craft, got some other of their stuff around too.
