Interesting double manifold

Sun Dec 11, 2005 1:43 pm

Rob got this with some auction items. Any idea what the big adaptors were used for ?

Wow! I stumped the panel!!! I am really suprised that one of our members has not been able to clear this mystery up. Imagine my suprise when I opened the package and saw the "expanders?" I have seen expanders making 1/2 to 3/4 inch, but never these. I hope somebody can shed some light on this soon.

Many moons ago one of my partners in crime from Ava Missouri had a set of normal looking 80cf doubles. The cylinder on the right had a bottom that would unscrew and he would fill it with largemouth bass that he was not supposed to be spearfishing for in Bull Shoals Lake. It had a big hole in the bottom to drain the water but I don't think anyone much noticed that.

Ok, that has nothing to do with Rob's manifold but it's damn funny I don't care who you are!

Most CO2 cylinders use 1"neck threads, but they are usually tapered pipe thread.

After closer inspection they appear to be tapered thread. If so there is no need for the O ring

Hey, who is the moderator on this thread? We need to get that POACHER guy out of here. That is a funny story. How did he get the fish while he was wearing the doubles? Could he just reach the hole whilewearing them or did he has a partner stuff them in? Also what sort of manifold does one use for a set of doubles such as those?
Tom, the manilod came with those big o rings on the expanders? I will measure the threads in the next few days and tell u if they are taperd or not. I am really curious what the deal is with this set up.. The guy that sold them to me has not answered my email ref them either?

He had to have a bit of help from a friend. He was quite a card! I'll bore you with the rest of the story at Sand Dog III

I don't have a clue but those adapters look like they may have been made by the previous owner for some odd sized tanks he owned.

I'd bet that Dr. Sam Miller would know about this manifold setup. :)

I got an email from the guy I bought the manifold off of. He explained what the heck the expanders were for. I thought you all may be curious so here it is.
"The adapters were for twin 3000 psi oxygen cyliders that were usesd in a Westinghouse submersible but were great light weight steel 55 cu ft tanks. Rusted, they just went into the dumpster. I charged them myself but the thin aircraft steel never passed the standard hydro so I wouldn't sell them."
So the mystery is solved!!!!!!!
They are a pretty neat and unique at any rate. I don't know if I will ever use them, but they are cool in my ever expanding collection of vintage dive gear.
