Rebuilding A USD J-Valve

Sun Sep 07, 2008 7:29 pm

I have a J-Valve that leaks with the valve turned off. The air is escaping past the o-ring on the reserve lever. Is there a kit to rebuild these valves?

There were a few models of J-valves and as such, you need to know which one you have. If it is later than it has an O ring. Early ones had washers for sealing. I would be sure all the parts are in the right configuration and tighten down the bonnet. That is usually the case on J-valve-side leakage. Do you have Robert's book?

What book are you referring to? Robert's Book?

Yes, Fred Robert's book, Basic Scuba, 2nd edition has schematics of the USD valves from the 1950s through later 1960s (which did not change during the J-valve succeeding years.) The later variation shown in Roberts is not the best diagram. I can't find my Mar-Vel catalog which has a nice schematic breakdown of the USD J-valve as produced recently.

It's on the USD repair manual CD as well if that helps....
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
