Tank/Reg Placement Question

Sat Apr 28, 2007 1:06 pm

I'm going to be diving my PRAM for the first time tomorrow. I have heard that the placement of the regulator is important in order to gain the best performance and was wondering where to start.

If I rememer from my last use of a DA, 30+ years ago - if the mouthpiece is above the regulator, it will freeflow (at least on the surface).

Should the regulator body be above or below or even with my mouth when I put the system on? what should I ask my buddy to watch for when we are underwater, as far as regulator position?

Thanks for your assistance.

The regulator body (the can) should be between your shoulder blades, close to your back. Much lower than most people wear them today.

The mouthpiece will free flow when it is out of your mouth and above the regulator/ diaphragm. That is normal ands it can be used to clear the mouthpiece (on a single hose regulator you would use a purge button to accomplish an out of breath mouthpiece clearing instead).

Here is a drawing showing the best placement for a double hose regulator. The easiest way to get this positiion is by way of a harness, the piece of tank equipment designed for regulator placement.

What you really need is BOTH. I have a travel harness from Simon and it is tereffic, but not quite kosher as far as being true vintage. Simon I will be ordering another harness soon.
