New Mistral HP Seat

Thu Sep 28, 2006 2:05 pm

Sometimes you just get on a roll……Here are a couple of samples of the BRAND NEW reproduction high pressure seats for domestic U.S. Divers Mistrals. These are one of the fantastic new reproduction parts I have been working on with my newly acquired machine shop friends. They are identical to the originals and should perform flawlessly in your regulators.
I plan on exercising and testing the samples for about a month just to be sure they hold up to wear and tear. I have a rig that will cycle the regulator 30 to 40 times per minute. Very similar to the rig you can see on scuba tools website for breaking in 2nd stage seats. I am not going to publish photos of my rig as it may have potential down the line for me. If all goes well after 30 days of testing they should go up for sale…..I am striving for a price point that will let you replace the seat every time you rebuild your regulator…..$15 to $20.00 each.
I would appreciate feedback and comments on the project……

You're a hell of a guy, I've got a couple of Mistrals that would love some new seats... I take back almost half the bad things I said about you today.

Bryan,

The production of high quality HP seats for the Mistral and DAAM will insure that we will be diving these classics decades down the road. With all of your reproduction parts, we are now capable of making these regs better than they have ever been.

Great mistral seats. Since i hasve a DW inbound, I will be needing parts for it.

This is a good thing. More so because the modern parts wiull last longer and may embody newest productiuon and materials which 50 years ago, just were not available

Does this mean I can start diving my old Pico Mistral again without worrying that when the seat is gone it is a goner :?:

Cool, it will be sporting a silicone diaphram, yellow moutpiece and yellow hoses, silicone cage valves and stainless banjo come SDIV.

This is going to be so cool :D .

Just to see if I can tear them up I have 2 Mistrals setting on a couple of Faber high pressure steel cylinders at 3400 psi. I also have 2 that I put pressure to and then shut off the valve and let set for hours at a time and even overnight to see if they seat perfectly enough to maintain their pressure over long periods of time. So far the testing has gone fantastic. I think some extended testing still needs to take place before they go out for sale. After that you can change out the HP seat after every dive trip if you like!

And all i can say to vintage brother nemrod's last post: WOW!!! no more sleepless nights, no more boo-hoo because i don't have yellow hoses. i am very happy for you james. may your checkbook run low, as will mine, when you stock up on the new yellow run. the old mistral is one of the best double hose regs ever made. hell, i think a mistral works better when i hear the slight hiss of a free flow.
armchair this afternoon mike :P

Good for you, Bryan. I doubt that the new seat will give any trouble. Some types of poppets have a tiny hole drilled through the brass to equalize pressure in the back of the seat and to prevent pop out. I am not aware that this was ever a problem with the Mistral.

Well, I'm in the dog house (again).

Here was my conversation with my wife last night at dinner.

Me: They now have a new HP seat for the Mistral!

Wife: What does that have to do with painting the spare bedroom?

Me: No, you don't understand. This will revive the Mistral regulators. Many have just become dust collectors because this part was basically non-existant.

Wife: So which 1 of your regulator does this part fix?

- - - - - - - LONG PAUSE AS THIS SINKS IN - - - - - - - -

Wife: You are not going to buy another 1 of those electrical boxes with hoses are you?

- - - - - - - ANOTHER LONG PAUSE AS THIS SINKS IN - - - - - - - -

So, any ideas what color to paint my new bedroom? I'm thinking something tropical. Maybe a shade of Mistral Yellow.

This seat was a great surprise. 1st yellow hoses now this.

After 23 years, I doubt she'll trade me in. Even if I get another reg.

Besides, she be over it by Feb or Mar.

.........that you KNOW of!

Thanks, BSea, for shedding light on the plight of others here on the forum!! Believe me, I know! I've learned to "zip-it" at home quite a bit.

BSea,
You need to take a different approach in your terminology. NEVER tell the wife you need another regulator, etc.
ALWAYS refer to the item(s) desired as Life Support Equipment. Trust me on this one.
