Old Fashioned Harness

Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:40 am

After much thinking I finally bought from Simonbeans one of his famous cotton original style harness units. I must say, I like it. I did not really think I wanted one because I remember them from when I was a kiddo their being very loose and floppy about. I went to the Voit SnugPack and saw no reason to change--I was wrong. I love this harness. It fits good, it is comfortable, it holds the tank sufficiently secure and is very minimalistic.

The best thing is that it holds the tank correctly low for double hose use with no modifications or gymnastics. I think I might need another of those. I am a convert.

I bought one for my first vintage tank, now I'm thinking about picking up another for doubles. I think the most fun I get out of vintage divers is the look others give me when I get out of the water. I remember someone wearing BP/W coming up and saying I was crazy and that the harness didn't look comfortable. I couldn't have disagreed more (although my buddy areed with him).

I think Simonbean's harness is as important as my reg when it comes to my vintage kit.

The Peanut king now has two of mine. He grabbed the 2nd-evermade-for-a-72-tank-basket-style at Portage. And I shipped another double one to him on Monday. Thanks good friends for the kind words. Unfortunately I have to follow the traditional, historical pattern. Rob, the T-shirt king, gets to be creative. It was really great to see the "Sand Dog Guys" in the Rob shirts at Wazee and Portage. A NAVED subsiderary????

Isn't it great to irratate the mask on backwards techie guys. I never thought it would matter to me what other people thought and usually does not but for some reason I get perverse satisfaction from irraatating them. Isn't it funny that he had a BP/wing and you had just the opposite---absolutely no BP and no wing or BC or BCD or SDLJD (PadI for scuba diver life jacket device). Everything about PadI involves some sort of "device".

Rob and I had the greatest time watching the teckies at the hopper with the mirror. Here we were in wet suits, with our harnessed tanks, weight belts, double hose regs, mask and fins. No integrated BC, snorkel or D-rings. As they approached, looking like dive stores with all the gaggets and gizzmos, Rob and I moved back from the mirror and hung suspended at 18 feet with the bottom 22 feet or more below. Our bouyany was perfect, slightly rising as we inhaled, and slowly sinking as we exhaled. Meanwhile, the mask-on-backward group (there were three) tried to look into the mirror. Even with the latest BC mounted on a backplate they were finning and sculling to stay in one place. It was an absolute riot. The feeling to be able to slip through the water without the constant thought of a dangling hose or 4 getting snagged is a pleasure. Once a diver experiences the vintage way, he is hooked. Viva NAVED.

The funny thing is when I'm not in my vintage kit, I am one of those backwards techie guys!

My dive "team" was planning a shallow practice dive in doubles last week. I had my double 72s and with rebuilt Mistral and J valve manifold in the back of my truck until I had to cancel my dive.

I really wanted to see the die-hard DIR guys freak out.

Why did you have to cancel?

The dive was Sunday, my wife's due date was Monday... That damn little angel on my right shoulder talked me out of it. Of course it is now D+2 today and still no baby (maybe I could get a dive out this afternoon)...

You know of course as soon as the dive boat leaves the dock your wife will go into labor. 8)

Thats what the little guy on my shoulder was saying. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law flew in today, hopefully they will nag my wife into labor.

Something we figured out at Portage and Blue Springs Quarry is that the Phoenix configured regulators stick out too far to allow you to raise the backpack up really high so the regulator sets low and closer to the center of your back.....With "most" standard backpacks. IMO the harness is the way to go 100% with this combo... Or some of the early backpacks that had the cutout for the regulator cans....JMO....Your results may vary.

Man that harness is comfy!
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
