By Jove John you are correct! 100% correct!

The early hoses were either WW 11 surplus or of inferior quality therefore did not have a long life as a dving regulator hose but did have a recycled life as a chain cover for the tailgates of the pick ups.

Therefore, if a Pick Up Truck was spotted with regulator hoses covering the tail gate chains it was a darn good possibility that the driver was a diver or knew some one who was a diver. A truck with the chains covered with regulator hoses was the diver's flag of that era.

Recall that the divers flag did not exist prior to 1957 but did not come to California until about a year and a half later, and was nationally and internationally made popular via the efforts of SDM around 1960.

Interesting bit of history that will soon be all but forgotten.

The only thing I know of are the tailgate chains. The Willies jeeps had chains, so did Ford on the very old ones. They banged around when you drove. They wasted a good diving regulator to cover the chains with the hoses?

I guess my farmer relatives were NOT divers as they just put a piece of water hose on their pickup tailgate chains. Talk about bringing back some memories. I was just a little guy when I tried to hook the chain on the tailgate and could not because it was so heavy!!!! Doc, you bring back some events in our lives that were forgotten, but should never happen. Thanks for the memories . . . . . . . . .
