Yea, you reach through the pin hole at an angle and press up on the seat. You will want to work your way around the edge of the seat as it moves up to prevent it from cocking. It is slightly smaller than the upper bore of the body so once you move it about 1/8in or so it will drop the rest of the way out.
That is where the 011 oring I was talking about earlier goes.

I forgot that hole was too small for the chopstick but it works for reinstalling the hard seat.
The older I get the better I was.

The HP seat came out easily with the O-ring intact. And a visit to my metal sculptor friend was a success - He was able to apply a little heat and work out the crimp. Is there a manual or at least a parts diagram available for this unit online?

Thanks everyone!

Online, go to the download section of this site and download the 1961 Healthways catalog. In the back is a part list and exploaded drawing of your reg.
Another source (the one I use) that you will find invaluable is a copy of "Basic Scuba" by Fred Roberts. It is pretty much the bible for these old reg and to vintage diving in general. A must read/have for any one interested in vintage regs.

One last stupid question! What I first identified as dirt on the internal parts was actually eroded chrome plating. If I have these parts re-chromed, will it affect the tolerance of the threads?

Not likely. As I understand proper rechroming process, the first step is to remove the plating, clean up the metal and then rechrome it so there should be no difference in the end.

Depends on where you get it plated and how thick they do it though I guess. I get mine done with someone not familiar with regs, so when I got the cans back, I had a hard time putting the band clamp on.

Ed, did you try it before the replating with the same diaphragm? The new diaphragms are a little thicker and are somewhat hard to get the clamp back on with even with the original plating....or at least mine was.

Good point there! I do believe that the new diaphragm served as the impetus for getting the reg rechromed... Must be that! :)

I'm more concerned about the internal parts, particularly the nozzle - The chrome plating is not bad but still could use a touch-up. Just wondering if I should leave well enough alone and just have the can re-plated rather than risk not being able to fit the HP seat back into the body. Thoughts anyone?

If it's internal, then I would leave it alone I guess. My rationale is that the internals should theoretically see little to no moisture due to the sealed nature of the reg.

Agreed, a little loss of chrome or pitting on the internal (inside the can) surfaces is not a big deal as long as the remaining chrome is not flaking off. Rechrome the cans to make them pretty if you like but I would not worry about the internals unless you just want to totally restore a reg.

You should discuss with the folks doing your plating what the acceptable tolerances are and are not. Chrome, powder coating, anodizing, cerakoting, PVD, nickel etc are all very different. Some turn out great..Others not so much.
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
