Tank Label Questions

Tue Sep 05, 2006 3:30 pm

I'm assuming that it's ok to take the tank labels from the early RAMs & DAs off by slowly bending the tabs. Or am I possibly going to break the tabs by doing this? In the past I've carefully soaked the reg so that the label wasn't exposed to the soaking solution, but I want to take it off & have it repainted, and just wanted to be sure this isn't a mistake.

Also, is there a particular color of blue on the RAM's from the late 60's? For example, can I go to a paint shop & ask for 123 blue? I think they are called pantone colors, but I'm not sure. The only reason this is a big deal is because I don't want to repaint the whole label, just touch it up a bit.

I also would need the blue color for the DA Aquamaster if it isn't the same.

Thanks

I have bent my tabs to take them off.

I will say first though that you need to be very careful.

I used a plastic putty knife to bend the tabs.
Slowly wiggle it back and forth.

I recently changed a badly scratched exhaust can. I bent the tabs on the label a little bit and then waited a few minutes for the metal to 'settle,' then bent it a little more. I repeated this until I could remove the label. I bent the tabs barely enough to remove the label. I started by using a flat razor blade to get under the tabs.

Metal will fatique if you bend it too quickly. I have ruined a few other projects by working too fast and not having the patience to wait when needed. However, it may not have been necessary, but I broke one many years ago, so I was extra careful. Doing it in stages worked for me.

I used the same slow process putting it on the new can.

Here's a link to an earlier thread that discusses repainting the regulator labels:

Thanks for the info. I figured those tabs would have to be babied to keep them from breaking. I just wanted to be sure.

I had seen that earlier thread about painting the label, but I didn't notice the color until I reread it.

If the tabs were to break all is not lost, you can use high bond tape to attach them.

Busted Tabs

Aquaseal worked for me when I busted the tabs of my DA label. Several dives later it is holding up just fine.
