Help with Healthways 1960 DH?

Sun Aug 31, 2014 4:26 pm

Hi Folks,

I just picked up a Healthways  on eBay. I have already got some things from Bryan and have contacted the Scuba Museum for parts. Do any of you have good pictures of the internals of this beast? It does have a Hope Page. I should get it here in about three weeks if I am lucky. I am unfamiliar with this type so any help is appreciated. I have read some of the posts and have already got a good idea. I really need to see the internals, though a diagram is great too.

Thanks Much

PS. I can't wait for the Krakens to be available.

Which one Russ?
There are 3 basic versions of HW DH regs. Supply side wise they are basically the same. The last model usually refered to as the Gold Label and is the best one to rebuild. Next is the "Deluxe". It is basically the same as the Gold label except the GL has a very good venturi which makes it a much better breathing reg. The original "SCUBA" is a pita to rebuild due to it's strange exhaust system, I suggest you not bother with it. It is easy to spot, both horns are on the rear can and the rear can has an area with exhaust holes in it.
If you look in the early to mid 60s HWs catalogs in the download section of the board, many of the catalogs have parts breakdowns in the back. The HW mouthpieces use 1 inch hoses and while you can get them, I much refer to use USD hoses and mouthpieces....actually I prefer the Voit hourglass MP over all of them.
They are fairly easy to service but I will tell you, the GL is VERY sensitive to adjust. It will work OK out of adjustment but there is a very narrow sweet spot that makes a lot of difference in how it works that you need to find.

Herman,

It appears that it is the first Model according to Rob at the Scuba Museum. I borrowed the picture from Rob's site, but that is what it looks like.

Yep, the first model...do yourself a favor, put it on the display shelf. The supply side is easy to get back in operation but the exhaust is a major undertaking if you want to get it right. Your efforts and cash are much better spent on almost any other reg. Don't mean to rain on your parade but thems the facts. For a divable reg, you are much much better off selling that one and waiting on a Gold Label. In contrast, it is easy to restore (with USD hose/MP) and a much better diving reg to boot.

And if someone tells you that you can just rub some magic rubber restoring stuff on the parts and make them new again please contact me, I have a bridge I would like to sell you.

Thanks Herman,

No my parade isn't rained on cause I really didn't pay much for it. Cool thing is I have a Hope Page that comes with it. Yeah, the guts look funky. But I have a real S.C.U.B.A. device and a piece of history, so no worries.
