DH regulator pressure questions from a new guy

Wed Feb 20, 2013 12:40 am

OK, here's where I'm at- I have a 1962 DAAM (my first and only DH reg and the first reg, single or dual hose, I've ever thought about working on) with (so far as I know) original 1st and 2nd stage components and a VDH silicone 2nd stage diaphram. I just got my own VDH IP gauge and am wondering what the readings I'm getting mean.

With the gauge connected to the hookah port, I attached the reg to a 1000 psi tank and get a reading of 125 psi. When I take a breath, the pressure goes to 105 and then back up to 125 when I stop breathing. It has sat the last hour at 125 psi with the tank valve closed with no change.

Obvious question #1- the pressure I'm reading is the IP or intermediate pressure, is it not?

Obvious question #2- the fact that the pressure holds steady tells me that my first stage is not leaking, correct?

Obvious question #3- the fact that every breath always takes the pressure to the same 105 implies that the 2nd stage is in decent health, yes?

Obvious question #4- Is 125 psi a good number to leave my reg set at? In that regard, if it does have any effect on freeflowing, I have no complaints about when and how my reg does freeflow- I have to be pretty well over on my back and when the freeflowing happens, I can easily keep the resultant pressure from getting past my throat and getting into my lungs.

You guys are a huge help and any answers will be take as hypothetical opinions only as I KNOW that we all follow the official Aqua Lung service manual to the "T" when we actually work on any regulator.

Setting IP on non balanced 1st stages

Regulator hard and soft seating 101

This happens on any double hose when the regulator is lower in the water than the mouthpiece
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
