History Lesson Needed

Thu May 04, 2006 8:36 am

This is from our host Chris at Weekie Watchee. He needs our help.

Bryan

Next year is Weeki Wachee's 60th anniversary.

I am trying to determine where Weeki falls in the diving historical dive timeline.

What I do know is that they where using compressors with hoses--probably from the Tarpon Springs Sponge Diving Industry--to do shows and dive into the Canyon.

Question:

Where did diving orginate in the US and what year?

Thanks,
Chris
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB

Where did the fist dive in the USA occurr? We know where the first powered flight occurred, where was the first scuba dive in the US and who did it?

I don't know about the first dive, but I once met Mel Fisher. He said he bought one of the first regulators imported into the US from France in 1946 in California. He then drove to Florida and made his first dive under the Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay.

I dove under that same bridge in 1970, with my first double hose, a Royal.

Twas a great dive. Mell was a great treasure man.
