VR1 cans?

Mon Nov 03, 2008 9:55 pm

This the Voit lung I picked up. I'm soon going to send it to the Master for a bath and complete restoration. I know i want to re-chrome the top can. But it seems the bottom can is a different finish. As you can see in the photo's. Was this common? Any recommendations on how to remove the light rust from the label without disturbing the paint? I think with a light cleaning the label would be 90-95%..

That is correct for that regulator. Front half shiny chrome back half satin chrome. The USD Overpressure breathing was the same way but had a different hose/nozzle assembly.....If you can find someone that has an extra Mistral Venturi nozzle for sale or trade it will make your VR-1 a much better breathing regulator. They came with a non venturi nozzle like the USD Stream Air....A great many of the USD Overpressure Breathing, and Stream Air regulators were updated with the Mistral venturi nozzle but I dont think I have ever seen a Voit with that upgrade even though the parts are identical.....Sorry to cloud the water but the difference is very noticeable...
I am think Jerry makes a replacement can lable for that regulator. You could use a new one and save the wear and tear on the original....JMO
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB

Be careful with the label they are aluminum not brass like the USD labels.

Indeed he does; I commissioned him to make a repro label for my VR-1. So the work has already been done. All you'd need to do was order one and give him the serial # off of your original label..
Quick Robin, to the Voitmobile!

Bryan,

I have looked at the MIstral section of the repair manual. I cannot for the life of me see the Nozzle (venturi). I see the Nozzle on the Aquamasters and the VR2. Can you tell me what I'm missing? Please forgive my ignorance.

Squirt penetrating oil on it, and let it soak for an hour or so. If it is still tight, repeat the process. It is very important to use a six point wrench, as it distributes the torque more evenly across the nut's surface. The orifice is brass, so it is easy to damage.

When I get really stuck parts on regulators and valves I use a propane torch and heat it up and spray Aero Koil penatrating oil on it. That usually breaks it loose.
