Now a "new" depth guage!

Thu May 24, 2007 11:52 am

I won an AMF depth guage on ebay a couple days ago. (sorry if anyone here was in on it) It is a small guage, to 200' orange face. It is a tall piece, and the heavy brass case is pressed into a rubber case/strap made in one piece. I am CERTAIN that you know well which guage it is. I am only posting about it because of the condition. It is absolutely brand new. and has never been worn, and the strap has never even been buckled. It's actually kind of exciting! Can anyone give me an idea of the date? Maybe early 70's?

The gauge was sold from the early 70's to the end of the decade. The model was DG6, and sold for $10.95 in the 1972 Voit catalog. It was produced in W. Germany, and features high quality construction throughout.

I recommend periodically removing the gauge from the strap housing. The unit is unplated naval brass, and should periodically be thoroughly rinsed to prevent corrosion. If you look closely at the brass housing, you will find that the machining is first rate.

I own two of them, one in unused condition. The other is in excellent condition, and is often on my wrist during my vintage dives.

My wife constantly reminds me that you "win" nothing on ebay. You still have to pay for it, thus you are merely the high bidder. Kind of takes the fun out of it, ha. Congrats on your find.

Thanks Greg! You ,,of course, are completely correct with the details on the guage. It does say W Germany on the face, and when I took it out of the case, it was unplated brass, and very well done. I hope to find another guage so that I won't be tempted to use this one too much. This site is pretty wild, talk about instant results!

I'm no expert on vintage gear, but I grew up diving with Voit gear from the 1970's. It also helps to have several Voit/Swimaster catalogs to use for research purposes.

Just glad I could help.
