How to generate an Avitar?

Can anyone provide some advise on how to generate an avatar for my profile? I've attempted to upload a jpeg but it doesn't show up on my profiles or posts - Help!

The photo needs to be fairly small, most likely you need to reduse the size. The max size is 100x100 pixels and 12mb max file size. There may be other ways but I use a photo editing program to reduse the size.
