Weird Sound from J-Valve

Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:42 pm

I just picked up some tanks from the hydro shop. I stuck a regulator on my J-valve equipped 72, and as I opened the valve, it made a metallic sound. I thought at first that it was DAAM that I was testing. However, it made the same sound on another regulator. Has anyone had a valve make a sound like that?

Well, it finally occurred to me to pull down the reserve lever, and the noise went away. I use this valve for the integrated HP port(it's easier than worrying about a banjo) and not the J-valve mechanism, so perhaps I've just never noticed this sound before. Interesting.

Common for J valves to do that. Because the J valve is operated by spring pressure that holds it closed, everytime you take a breath the valve is forced open by the pressure differential that is created. The air is squeezeing by the seat as opposed to when the lever is down and the valve is held wide open mechaniclly.
