How old is your C card?

I bought a rare Porpoise CA-2 scuba from the original owner a few years ago. (See single hose section) This was his certification. It came from the Melbourne City Baths where the first Australian scuba school was started. La Prieur started the first scuba school in france nearly 20 years before.

This certificate in unique as it has rebreather qualifications printed on it. These were lined out if diver did not complete that phase. The Australians had almost been invaded by the Japanese and a record was kept of all divers who were certified in case they needed to be drafted by the Royal Australian Navy. Thus the military rebreather qualifications. The first Porpoise scuba was actually an oxygen rebreather.

This card was the one issued by my diving club when I was a young diver. Later our club's training went commercial and took over from the City Baths course. This card was a pocket sized card.

I began diving in 1960 and got a card like this one. Mine has since self destructed. I did not get an American YMCA C card until 1975. It was hard to get air without one. Steve

Nice!

1983 for me. It’s not nearly so cool, but does have a photo of a much much thinner and more athletic young man on it... 8)

I forget who that was...

I've still got my original PADI card from 1978. Dang, even that's gettin' to be ancient history. I was diving a little more then a year before getting certified. The guy who sold me my first dive gear made me promise to get my cert when I bought it.

Dec 1, 1969 for me... 3 hrs per night every Tuesday for 10 weeks at the St. Paul YMCA. The original card and certificate were lost long ago but I got new ones from NAUI last year. I wasn't in their computer records but thank heavens they still had some old files they found me in. My instructor was Nelson Jonnes. I was 15 years old. Geez...

I am a relative newby as my first card was issued in 1987. I had been diving for 20 years prior to that but got the card just so I could get on a dive boat when I went to St. Thomas on my honeymoon. To get that card I just traded an istructor I dove with a pony bottle for it.

Phillip Goddbold was the Instructor in El Paso Tx.
He had great stories too.
His 1st lung was made from a CO2 fire extinguisher.
In '77 he was older than dirt to me.
I was 13 yrs old.
Everybody was older than dirt to me back then.
Now I'm older than dirt!

My YMCA card self destructed, by I replaced it through the YMCA on line. They still had the records. I believe YMCA no longer certifies, but you may still be able to get a replacement card. It would be worth checking. Steve

Ooops  I have just read my earlier post. It should read 1976, I was certified in 1976 as a SCUBA diver and not 1996. I put the error down to a) My fat fingers and b)the fact that the key board I'm using can't spell or read my mind

Happy diving
